Boris' "thing" used to be to get behind the books on the bottom shelf, lay on his side and force his way behind. He would then proceed to systematically push out one book after another very quickly as he moved from one side of the shelf to another. Next step was the second shelf, repeat. I USED to have my books in order of author and publication (headwall)

Ikea sells bookcases with doors - I used to just leave a pet bed on the bottom shelf of my old bookcase, because Twiggy has a bad habit of chewing things she's not supposed to - like books & video games, if she can reach them.
She was a nightmare when she was teething I've never had a cat ruin so many things and totally put Rolo to shame in terms of levels of destruction.

How do you post photos? I think I've found a ferret proof bookcase, has glass lockable doors!

good luck with the book case! The e-reader isn't a bad idea, but be warned, your baby may go after that as well. If I leave my ipad anywhere that Honey can reach, she immediately goes after it and tries to bite the corners!

What about just giving in and making the bottom self ferret friendly?? Getting the kid books and put a couple toys and be done... something to distract ??

If you do get/install doors, use a zip tie just snug enough you can pull it off the door knobs, that keeps the doors from opening when it's on.

I always thought ferretproofing bookshelves meant, "don't have anything on the bottom shelf" =D We have an IKEA shelf called expedit with the bottom shelves with boxes they cant get out. Here's a picture of my untidy shelves mid-move. We also have some Billy-shelves with the same kind of boxes on the first shelves which they can wrestle out and might climb on, but these shelves are not in their room and I'm always near and can stop them from climbing. In the periods where I take them on walks regularly they don't climb the bookcases. I always find them much less prone to wrecking-behaviour when they are mentally stimulated =D.

I actually took a few pieces of cardboard and pushed them into the shelf... I didn't think it would work but after few minutes of trying to get past the cardboard, he has never messed with the shelf again! I don't have a picture atm but will try to get one to show you tomorrow
