So, before I got ferrets, I had cockatiels! [img src="http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h352/JW_2012/Emoticons/ .gif" src="http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h352/JW_2012/Emoticons/ .gif" src="http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h352/JW_2012/Emoticons/ .gif" style="max-width:100%;"] I actually had to discuss getting ferrets thoroughly with my housemate since we have tiels. We decided that we would give the ferrets a designated room all for themselves since we cannot yet ferret proof the main living area of our small house/flat. So now they're in my old room, which is the second largest room in our house. (we have 3 bedrooms) anyway, We love to let the tiels out for a fly every now and then since they need to exercise, so it was a major red light in my head when ferrets came into thought. My housemate and i came to an agreement though, that once we ferret proof the lounge room/kitchen (its and open room) that we could let the ferrets out for a free roam out there and at that time we could move our tiel cage out for some sunshine in the backyard. That way, they don't end up as ferret snacks. ha. ;A; We actually have a cage with a large stand, so the ferrets wouldn't be able to reach... but they can jump and I didn't want the tiels, neither the ferrets to get any injuries so its best in our case that we have them separate. LETS SEE SOME PICS! Names by pic: Rosie, Pretty boy ('PB') & Rosie (same with next pic).
PB, PB&Rosie, PB.
Rosie, Apollo & Naoki, PB. Naoki's Tail & Apollo & Rosie & PB, Apollo, Naoki & PB. Rosie is the only female while the rest are all males. I had to do bite training for all the males since they all were untame when we got them. PB had the worst bite, his was the only one that drew blood and I was forced to use gloves while i held him. Eventually he stopped biting, and would let me hold him without gloves since he began to trust me. ^^ Now he's a sweet heart. He doesn't sing as much as he used to. Rosie and Naoki are the main tiels who sing in our flock >3< Apollo had a hard bite. It stung and was quite hard but never drew blood. But it left a nasty finger bruise. haha. Apollo no longer bites, but is very 'flighty' He can be held and won't bite but he would prefer to be left alone and loved from a distance. Same would go for Naoki who hates being held. He used to bite, but no longer does. Naoki has a skittish personality but a very beautiful singing voice.He has alot more work to be done when it comes to trust, but other than that he's a wonderful tiel >3< (My house mates tiel's are rosie and 'pretty boy' but i tend to call him 'pb'.. Apollo and Naoki are mine.) Hop~

They r all very cute.
My husband likes birds, but i would have to clean behind it, so I have never encouraged him to get one.
Cleaning behind my ferrets is a major task, then cleaning the aquarium-------

Cleaning behind my ferrets is a major task, then cleaning the aquarium------- They are very cute, especially when they let me sleep in once in a while. At least I have an automated alarm clock that tells "its time for the feed and spot cleaning rounds~". We have a huge cage and cleaning is a nightmare sometimes. The pull out tray is quite heavy so most of the time we just take it outside and hose it down with a high pressure hose. (of course when we take the birds out <u<) Most of the time they are quite clean. The only problem is the seeds end up everywhere, literally. We had to result in getting a seed catcher to save the mess outside the cage. >3< Cleaning the ferret cage is quite easy, when yuki isn't distracting me >3<

Oh! I love Cockatiels ^-^yours are so pretty!! I know how hard it is to ferret proof a house XDD my ferret lives with... err.. 7 other rodents so I had to arrange my house in such a way that he can be out in a safe area but won't interact with the other guys and result in a nasty massacre. The only time Sherlock met a chinchilla was when he first came home and was a bit out of it all, there's a video of the encounter : holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/18332/chinchilla-meets-ferretI'm glad you worked out a safe way to keep all the pets happy :3

Massacres should be avoided at all costs. Ahhh, Chinchilla's are so adorable. I love your video!! Such a cute reaction. Your ferret seemed so laid back~ >3< I want one, but they're banned in australia, along with hamsters, gerbils, hedgehogs and alot of exotic animals. They seem to ban all the cute animals. (WHY AUSTRALIA WHY) Guess the strict rules is the reason we're free of many diseases, like rabies and such. I think i'm going to have to ferret proof the ferret cage now <.< Since this morning it seems Yuki managed to get out and make a mess. (lucky the door was closed otherwise he could have done anything, like find those holes in the kitchen that haru got into or have some feathered snacks, of course if he could reach the cage. ;A; Before I had the main area off limits i had let haru wonder around and she didn't even notice the tiels-no massacre there but she did get herself into trouble by getting into some holes in the kitchen that apparently exist. ha... "ferrets." (I thought this posted ages ago, but i think i forgot hahah )

Lol WHAT?! How can Chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils and hedgehogs be banned in Australia? but you can have a ferret?! XDD Thats so weird! they are very common pets in europe, chinchillas are very delicate but hamsters and gerbils are like... the most common pet to have, and usually the first ones children have here. There are more cases of ferrets with rabies than domestic rodents, at least in my clinic we had the odd case of rabies (we are supposed to be rabies free too...) and its been mostly ferrets :/
I'm happy that Yuki didn't get into too much trouble and the birdies are fine! (dance)
I had to ferret proof my Ica 60 because they would push the tray out and escape through the gap hahaha

(dance) I had to ferret proof my Ica 60 because they would push the tray out and escape through the gap hahaha I know >3< The main reason is because of our strict biosecurity laws. (Remember not long ago there was an incident with the actor Johnny Depp and his doggies? He's lucky, breaking biosecurity and quarantine rules are a big no no here<.<;;; They want to protect against exotic pests or diseases, especially since they can pose risks to our environment among other things. We don't have rabies in our animal populations here. Australia and New Zealand are Rabies free~ ^^ My ferrets only required one vaccine here, the distemper one. I heard in places like the U.S that fuzzies had to have like 3 or 4 vaccines? In a way its completely understandable but at the same time, its such a bummer. I would have loved to have a hamster or even a chinchilla. I was recently watching videos on hedgehogs and was like "I want... *googles about pet laws in oz* oh d*mn it australia."*sigh* Ah, back when the british settlers came and introduced rabbits to oz, things became out of hand with how they got loose and bred like wildfire. Thats a main reason ferrets were introduced here and pretty much stayed. I read somewhere that our climate was a main reason ferrets couldn't reproduce in the wild and create feral colonies. They also had alot of predators. ;A; These days the aren't really used for hunting and are more commonly owned as companion pets. >3< Even as pets, ferrets aren't that common. Even I didn't even know we had ferrets here until late last year. The most common small pets are rats, mice & guinea pigs. Oh I've never seen a ferret in a pet shop where i live, but i did go to this one pet shop that was selling a huge cockatoo >3< I noticed you can get sugar gliders as pets in some countries, even rock wallaby's, but here they're native so its technically illegal(especially if they're endangered species.Most native animals are protected so they cannot be owned as pets. There are exceptions though, but require permits.) In some states its also illegal to own Ferrets. Like in queensland. ;A; Its illegal to import live ferrets from other countries (that have rabies) regardless of the reasons. Oops. I feel as if i have written an essay >3<

In United states all dogs and ferrets are suppose to have rabies shots. My dog gets a rabies shots that last 3 years. Like you can not go to petstore and get your dog shampooed unless dog is up to date on rabies. Distemper, is not required by law. ( not that i know of ) If boarding a dog they may want it to have a kennel cough(bordatella) shot--though not sure. There is no KGB that monitors vaccines here . There are thousands of dogs and who knows the number of ferrets without vaccinations, It is only when someone is bitten, you need proof of shot or animal will be quarantined. No shot other than rabies for ferret is required and many people do not do that, as it is completely unnecessary for house bound ferrets. My vet was cleaning a ferret's teeth, and from what i understand, she holds the mouth open with a rubber band or something and somehow something came loose and teeth came down on her hand and brought the blood. She said she had to call the law, and ferret was quarantined for 10 days. We do have a coyote that lives near the house, and that scares me as distemper can be brought in on shoes and clothes,but i am going to take my chances and forego that shot as well.

Oh wow... I was actually considering moving to Australia because I LOVE it there and my dream was to work in a clinic for exotic animals there. But I can't leave my pets behind D: bummer! Canada was my second option (I am half canadian after all) and I guess its the place I'd go to with my gang of LEGAL rodents and my ferret(s?) too! In Spain there is only the distemper vaccine and the rabies one depending on which area you are in. Here it isn't properly checked and some imported ferrets don't get it done and I guess that is how we have mini rabies outbreaks every now and then :/

In Spain there is only the distemper vaccine and the rabies one depending on which area you are in. Here it isn't properly checked and some imported ferrets don't get it done and I guess that is how we have mini rabies outbreaks every now and then :/ Australia is very nice ^u^ Though in summer is gets very hot. Some places reach up to around 50°C. Where I live the hottest i remember was a blazing 48°C or 49°C so its crucial to keep all the animals nice and hydrated as well as cooled. In winter i can get really cold as well and most of the time is around 8 to 5°C. We're currently in winter and last night got really chilly. I tend to check on the animals a couple of times at night since we cannot run the heater all night and give them extra blankets. ;A; Our exotic animals are limited as well compared to Canada and America. It really sucks that you most likely won't be able to bring your ferrets here ;n; I've been trying to research about possibilities and found the following,"Biosecurity Australia has not developed import conditions for ferrets and as such they are not permitted into Australia." (it was the same for pet rats, mice, other rodents etc) Since reading this, it gives me the impression that the circumstances could change in the future if we're all lucky~ ^^ If ferrets become more popular then they would have to start making some decisions since its not fair that people can brings cats and dogs, yet poor little fuzzies cannot come. Canada seem more friendly when it comes to importing companion animals but i think a permit is required. I kind of wish it was like that for australia ;A;

Oh my goodness, they are so gorgeous! I love birds! Are they affectionate like cockatoos, or are they more flighty? I've never owned a cockatoo so i cannot tell the difference. But from my current tiels, some are flighty, while some are affectionate and would fly over for cuddles. I guess it depends on the bird's personality. ^^ I found my female tiel is the most affectionate. She would fly over, land on someones head and start 'preening' their hair. >3< They're very sociable most of the time too!
