My first ferret taught me about looking in furniture. She made a small hole in the liner at the bottom of the bed springs and liked to sleep there. I spent a couple hours looking for her, and looked under the bed twice before I noticed the lump hanging down. After that, every other fert would sleep up there until the thing got shredded. Rico has done that to our couch! But we have covers over the bottom so you can't see if he's under there!

So scary but happy ending! My ferrets escaped once I just left the front screen door completely open so of course they walked through the open door. I noticed it was really quiet after about 15 minutes and my jaw dropped that I could be so dumb. Two are deaf so squeaking is not an option. I found one being eyed by a cat three doors down, one next door in a back yard, and one just behind my place. All of them had their tails all poofed up and seemed glad to see me. Didn't come running to me though haha they hadn't been out long enough to want to come back that badly.

I should have known he is WAY smart enough to squeeze through the tiniest of cracks at the top! I would have flipped out if I had to find three! Especially deaf fur babies! I am so glad you found them all and they were safe.

Like others, I saw the title and my heart skipped a beat, screaming no...not Rico, was so glad that the initial post was made with a happy ending already included. The unexpected slips are the reason all my ferrets are micro-chipped, it may not guarantee a happy ending but anything that tips the odds in my favour I go with. Course the best option is that they never do this, but with ferrets there are no guarantees.
so happy Rico is home. You hope that it will teach him not to do something similar but it won't because even if he was cold, wet and scared, it all turned out fine...mum found him!

I am so glad I could give everyone a happy ending. I don't think I could post right away if it was a bad ending. I would have been heart broken and devistated. I need to get Rico micro chipped. That would have been a huge help! I hope he did learn his lesson. But I doubt he did. I hope I never let this happen again.

I will admit I thought the worse when I read the title and I had goosebumps while reading your post. So glad Rico is back home, safe and sound. I hope you find a way to make the window (and house) secure, but from what I have been reading it is never 100% no matter what you do. Please give him a hug from me.

I'm so happy you found him! I had a scare like this with max once. I was putting them up once at night and I could not find Max. Everyone told me to go to bed and she would be there in the morning. Woke up the next morning still couldn't find her. My dad had to go outside and rip the trash open, we searched the whole neighbor hood, and went door to door. The whole time I was in tears. The whole time I had a nagging feeling to check in the one of the couches. My parents had basically given up. So I went and looked under the couch. There she was. She had gotten under the coushin and slipped in the couch. we had to cut her out. Oh my gosh she was IN the couch? That crazy! I'm so glad you checked there. That would have been the LAST place I would possibly think to look. I know. They never even went never that couch before. Now that I got benny he sleeps in it when I let them run so we just cut the whole bottom out. Now they get in the side of the couch (headwall)

I once covered the bottom of the couch at my moms so they couldn't get under it. (my mom wont let me cut out the bottom of her couches) and they tore the side open to get in

My previous ferrets would do this too, sleep in the couch, or the dresser drawers, or anywhere else that was inconvenient. I admit I was not as careful about ferret proofing and they were pretty much allowed ANYWHERE in the house, so they were found in some pretty random places. Luckily they would come with the squeaker though, so they were easier to locate in that respect. My two boys now are pretty good about going back to their cage for naps. I am lucky with that at least. One is deaf so the squeaker obviously doesn't work and the other is 1. new to us and 2. a BRAT lol and wont come to a squeaker. I think I would be SOL if they fell asleep somewhere besides their cage... that and frantically looking for them.

Rico is allowed everywhere but the laundry room because he likes to steal the doggy and cat bowls for some odd reason! But he sleeps all over! The oddest place I found him sleeping was under my bathroom counter in the bag with all the cotton balls in it! It was too funny! That was when he was a baby though!

My worst fear is that someone gets out, and we never find them. Since mine are free roam, I obsess over doors. Ponce did get once, shortly after we moved to Tennessee. Paul heard a knock on the door and opened it, to find Ponce looking up at him. We think Ponce slipped out, when Paul went outside to smoke. Then when he found himself outside, he must have thrown himself at the door. I still shudder to think of losing him, like that.
