Last night I put Rico in his cage around 11. Then I woke up and let the dogs out around 4 am he was sleeping by me. I figured I didn't close the cage right. So I let him sleep with me. I woke up around 11 and went and got coffee and started using the squeaker toy to try and get Rico to come out. After 15 minutes of squeaking there was no sign of Rico anywhere. Then I looked outside my window to find that my screen had fallen off.
My heart just sank.
I had forgotten I left the window cracked. Rico was gone. I ran outside and started squeaking and calling his name. There was no sign of him anywhere. It's raining and cold. I had no clue how long he had been out. I just started crying and thinking "What have I done? I let him out. I let him escape it's my fault." I just broke down crying. I couldn't call Nate because he was taking his agility test for the police job.
I called my mom and she rushed over to help. I was just sobbing when she pulled up. She said "you're not gonna find him crying like this come on you can do this." I collected myself and started walking down the street squeaking his you and screaming his name. A half a mile later, I see something moving in someone's bushes.
IT WAS RICO!!!
I started screaming his name and squeaking his toy. He ran into their garage and I ran up to him and called him and he came running. He was cold shivering and soaking wet! I just started crying and running home. Mom grabbed Rico and toweled him off. I was in so much shock. I just sat down. I didn't believe it was him.
As soon as mom got done toweling him off he jumped on my chest and crawled on my shoulders. I just held him. Then I started checking every square inch of him making sure he was okay.
I just went in bed and laid down with him. He went straight to sleep. I have never been more scared in my entire life. I felt like my heart had been ripped out of my chest. I called my vet and she came rushing over and checked him. (Thank god she is one of my best friends mother). Then she said to watch out for a cold because he had been out in the rain and gave me some antibiotics just in case he got sick.
You never realize how much you love something until it's gone (in this case almost gone). Rico is seriously like a child to me. I don't know what I would have done with myself if something happened to him. I am moving our room around right now so he can't easily climb out like that ever again. I am so glad he is safe.

Oh, Thank Heavens. My heart sank, when I saw your subject title. I just can't tell you how HAPPY, HAPPY, HAPPY, that this HAPPY ending to Rico's story, has made me. You will never forget this close call. We all have had one or two, don't beat yourself up too bad. It's part of being a ferrant or parent, and you made it thru this one okay. Give Rico (and yourself) an extra hug from me, and tell your Mom that I said, she's a super good Grandferrant.

Wow, that was a close one. Like Ponce, I was freaked out so I skipped to the end to see if there was happiness there. Squeakies can be live savers. Well done.

I can't believe he traveled that far away!!! I will for sure be giving Rico hugs from you! I haven't let him out of my sight. He's like Leave me alone mom! Nate almost started crying when he read the text that we couldn't find Rico. He cried when he got home am held him. (I have never seen him cry) That was insane. It has been a HAPPY HAPPY ending!

I'm so glad he's home safe. Poor thing looked so helpless out there. I can't imagine the poor ferrets that just get let out into the wild that don't know what to do. It was awful seeing him like that.

I went through that horror more than once, without the happy ending. I've learned how to slow ferrets from ghosting out the door behind you, later to find out that my lazy sons were just leaving the stupid doors open, in summer, with the air on. But one did get out a torn screen. So your happy ending made my day.

I'm so happy you found him! I had a scare like this with max once. I was putting them up once at night and I could not find Max. Everyone told me to go to bed and she would be there in the morning. Woke up the next morning still couldn't find her. My dad had to go outside and rip the trash open, we searched the whole neighbor hood, and went door to door. The whole time I was in tears. The whole time I had a nagging feeling to check in the one of the couches. My parents had basically given up. So I went and looked under the couch. There she was. She had gotten under the coushin and slipped in the couch. we had to cut her out.

So glad that you found him! A note on rearranging the room though - don't think that that will be enough to keep him from climbing out. Ferrets have the ability to levitate. lol They can and will climb just about every impossible obstacle you create. Just look at these pics on pg 2 of this thread.... www.holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/13597/new-ferret-room?page=2Also for the antibiotics, I would personally hold off on giving any unless he actually starts showing signs of feeling unwell. Overuse of antibiotics is a major, major contributor to antibiotic resistant infections.

I'm so glad you found him. It's amazing as to how far they can go in so little a time. Such a scare and yes, I know exactly that whole scenario. I discovered that my wee jill, Lady Morgain had ripped a hole in their outdoor play area. She had been out there maybe 10 or 15 minutes. Luckily for me, she responds to her name and comes when called. She was very busy playing and hunting in the forest behind my house. She already had 3 chipmunks (I will assume that's why she went through the fencing to begin with) when I interrupted her hunting. I thought I was going to be physically sick when I saw that hole in the fence and was sure I'd never see her again. There is so much trouble and many wild things in my area and I couldn't believe she would survive for very long out there. ciao

That would have been the LAST place I would possibly think to look.

Nor has he tried to climb the blinds. (Thank goodness!) That's exactly what my vet told me she said unless he had ANY signs then I am not supposed to give anything to him and I should call her before doing anything. You really know a lot about ferrets! I hope I can know as much as everyone on here one day. Every day I learn something new that's for sure.

She killed 3 chipmunks, woah! She likes her meat! I'm glad she was safe and didn't go very far!

My first ferret taught me about looking in furniture. She made a small hole in the liner at the bottom of the bed springs and liked to sleep there. I spent a couple hours looking for her, and looked under the bed twice before I noticed the lump hanging down. After that, every other fert would sleep up there until the thing got shredded.
