Hmmm, I'm about 100% positive I forgot something, I hope it comes to my mind, so be prepared for some more articles Anyway, again: I'm very sorry I left you alone and without note, I hope you are ok? How is the family, how are the ferrets? I saw some pics on FB, they look gorgeous! I giggled about the fridge pic, so cute!! I had a bit a rough time, but I'm getting on track Besides everything we had two minor snow storms, I had a thin layer of snow everywhere in the covered part of the oudoor enclosure, also where there was supposed to be no snow, so I spent a considerable time cleaning I also took in a little lovely biter, she will move to a friend this friday , hopefully she will get along with her ferrets, so she will have found her forever home. There is still a second young ferret at my place, I'll have to post a picture, he's terribly cute, but coming from a doubtful ferretry, all his siblings have heart conditions, so I think I'm better off for a heart sonography before thinking about finding a home for him...

:christmaspresents: aaaaaand now, tatatatataaaaaa! I'll post some quiz questions, please take your time to answer them, they are ment to be a repetition of things you should already know, but don't worry if you don't know an answer, we will discuss your answers and to some of them there is no right or wrong 1) What are some good emergency taurine sources if you run out of heart? (Please list two or more) 2) How can you tell if your ferret is getting too much or too little bone? 3) Are cooked bones ok for ferrets? 4) List 3 organs aside from liver. 5) Is it a good idea to mix muscle meat, bone in and organs all in one meal. Explain why 6) About how long is a ferret's digestion time? 7) What is a healthy diet item that can be used for hairballs, and how often should you give it? 8) Are leaner meats better for your ferret or fattier meats?

sure! That would be awesome =) I would love to learn as much about my babies as possible especially since I have two who just turned 3 in December. Also, I would hate to have something unexpected happen to one of my younger ones and not know what to do. On a side note, I have introduced 2 new meats to my babies and only Fred (the garbage disposal) seems interested but they all tasted it so who knows. I found another raw site and I ordered them some muskrat(sp?) and alpaca. They also had what they called a "super mix" and it came in lamb. It doesn't have bone in it but it does have muscle meat, heart, liver, spleen, tripe and kidney. It smelled awful but they ate some. If it doesn't go over well then at least the cat liked it

That's fine =) We're good and everyone got a clean bill of health. My vet seems to think that as long as there are no symptoms of anything we can wait till Bonnie and Clyde turn 4 before we start having their blood drawn every 6 months. What do you think? I know she's trying to save me money but I always want what's best over what's cheap. I'm sorry for the little hobb. I hope his heart is okay. I can't even go into the pet stores here anymore bc the little kits are so pitiful and I want to rescue all of them. There's one store in particular that has had a bino for several months now and I really want to take him home but he's had the same cage mate and I am afraid they are far too bonded to only take one. Sadly, I cannot afford to take in 2 more ferrets Alright, let's get to something a little less sad: 1) What are some good emergency taurine sources if you run out of heart? (Please list two or more) turkey thigh, cow tongue, chicken necks 2) How can you tell if your ferret is getting too much or too little bone? too little bone and their poops will be runny and not firm with too much bone you will begin to see pieces of bone in their poops. 3) Are cooked bones ok for ferrets? no, most of the nutrients will have been cooked out of it and it also makes it easier to splinter and cause choking hazards to the ferret. 4) List 3 organs aside from liver. kidneys, lungs, pancreas 5) Is it a good idea to mix muscle meat, bone in and organs all in one meal. Explain why I don't think so bc the organ meals are important to the nutritional needs and if you mixed htem all together you would not be able to be sure how much of the organs they were actually eating. I suppose if they ate a mouse it would be all at once but if they ate the whole thing then you'd be able to measure it =) Also, organs tend to be a little rougher on the tummy and I always have the bone in meal as the following meal to help firm up the poops. 6) About how long is a ferret's digestion time? From mouth to tail up in corner, about 3-4 hours 7) What is a healthy diet item that can be used for hairballs, and how often should you give it? eggs. Make sure that you give only yolk or that you use a fork to mix the yolk and white together so that the biotin doesn't hinder protein absorption. You can give it to them once a week. 8) Are leaner meats better for your ferret or fattier meats? I think both are okay for them but I would limit the amount of fattier meats due to the fact that some fuzzies have a hard time digesting the fats. I like to give them some of the fattier meats in the winter to beef them up and help their winter coats. Ok, I got a little present for you, check your fb-messages, I sent you a link Awww, you are an excellent "cook" for your ferrets, they are spoilt rotten!!! I still haven't managed to check with my local farmer to get Alpaca meat *shame on me* Hahaha, I did the same the last few weeks, to ease my schedule I ordered a lot of meat online at a barf-supplier where you can get 3 different sizes of each meat, there are "chunks", "strips" and "mince", so I ordered a bit of everything cut in about every size they offer: my ferrets loved everything in chunks, but strips or mince they were like "ewww, mom we're no longer babies we want real food!!", so my neighbours cat's ate a lot of raw recently (giggle)

Well, it's up to you if you want to do regular checks, it depends what you want to have checked every 6 months, it can get really costly... I rarely do "preventative" exams, better saving the money for the moment they get sick. Or for the moment when you feel something might be wrong but you don't know what it could be, trust your gut feeling and go for it!
The cardiologist I want to go to is on holiday, I have an appointment in March for the teddy bear hob, I'm happy it isn't something life-threatening urgent!

And now to your answers: 1) What are some good emergency taurine sources if you run out of heart? (Please list two or more) turkey thigh, cow tongue, chicken necks -> absolutely, in general every hard working muscle has elevated taurin content as well as brains!2) How can you tell if your ferret is getting too much or too little bone? too little bone and their poops will be runny and not firm with too much bone you will begin to see pieces of bone in their poops. -> even very hard stool can be a sign of too much bone, also the color can be an indication of upper limit calcium level 3) Are cooked bones ok for ferrets? no, most of the nutrients will have been cooked out of it and it also makes it easier to splinter and cause choking hazards to the ferret. -> the most important is the sharp splinter effect of cooking, it's like feeding broken pieces of glass 4) List 3 organs aside from liver. kidneys, lungs, pancreas -> yes, yes and yes! 5) Is it a good idea to mix muscle meat, bone in and organs all in one meal. -> that's one of those "there is no yes or no answer"- questions ferrets tend to self regulate, they rarely eat too much, so in theory they should also know their dietary needs and they should know what would be best for them to eat; however most ferrets did not grow up raw and had to learn "raw" later in their life, you can try after - a good while on raw - to offer mixed meals and see if they mix and match on their own. I usually do an attempt after a year on raw, but it takes a lot of observation time, especially with a large group I use a booklet to take notes and write down my observations at feeding time, if everybody eats what they are supposed to over a week or two fine, if not... it is easier to feed according to the frankenprey menu 6) About how long is a ferret's digestion time? From mouth to tail up in corner, about 3-4 hours -> 7) What is a healthy diet item that can be used for hairballs, and how often should you give it? eggs. Make sure that you give only yolk or that you use a fork to mix the yolk and white together so that the biotin doesn't hinder protein absorption. You can give it to them once a week. -> in the egg white is an enzyme called avidin, it eliminates biotin and blockes biotin absorption in the body, yolk contains more biotin than the white contains avidin, so either feeding them mixed together or only the yolk. if you have a really weird shed you could give mixed egg every day for a short period of time (like 1 egg/day for 4 ferrets for 2 weeks) 8) Are leaner meats better for your ferret or fattier meats? I think both are okay for them but I would limit the amount of fattier meats due to the fact that some fuzzies have a hard time digesting the fats. I like to give them some of the fattier meats in the winter to beef them up and help their winter coats. -> carnivores get most of their energy out of fat, so fattier cuts are perfectly ok for them, it should as you said, still result in normal stool, if not it is too much fat, and as you said especially for gaining winter weight they go crazy over fattier food

Congratulations  You've graduated and you're ready to walk this path alone, now . You have the foundation to help you feed your fuzzes in a more natural and healthy manner. Please remember that your learning never stops, and dietary needs change from ferret to ferret and throughout each their lives. I would like you to be aware that though you now have the capability and the knowledge to create your little ones diets you are never alone and that your mentor (you need only pm) is always available to you. The list is also a very good resource and you should always be aware that it's available to answer any questions you may have either about diet or care. As you're using a lot of grinds please remember that dental care might be an issue, so remember to either brush or check frequently Good luck, in a few days Sherry will lock down this thread and place it in the archives but be aware that you can always look through it as a reference tool but you just will not be able to post to it. Your mentor will be in to congratulate you shortly :wave3:
ciao
