Seems most info posted here is about hobs. I assume that the jills don't have as much odour and sliming/marking issues as the hobs?

They don't have the sliming, but from what I understand they have their own odour, which is stronger than our mill babies. Heather would be a good one to talk to about this.

The jills stink too....but if you have jills, you usually have hobs too - and, well, the greasy hobs win the contest with their wonderful scent, greasy fur and dribbling urine. While hobs are just a pain to deal with, jills can be difficult to manage with their heat cycles, jill jabs, false pregnancies, etc. -So... most people just get the girls spayed unless they intend to breed them. Deslorelin implants may begin to change this approach - but even for chemical castration, all the studies seem to focus on hobs ---- I suspect that it has to do with the risk of jills coming into season if the implants don't work...then yo have to manage the heat cycles. *-_ jennifer

From what I remember reading a number of people in both Europe(Netherlands in particular), and in Australia have successfully used des for chemical castration in their jills.

I've also heard that DES has been known to take a jill out permanently....but this is secondary information and I've heard no update since then. Someone had given DES to take a young jill out (first season), she went out and so far 2 yrs later she had not come back into season. As far as scents the wee jills do have a scent, it's similar to the hob but oh way more subtle. You have to put your nose down to them. It appears to occurs when they're at the peak of their season (when you put them with the v-hob). They are a bit oilier at that point too. Now, one thing to consider, I can smell when my guys are adrenal, some people may not even notice. They also get a bit tempermental too, false pregnancies don't help either. Let's just say that during their season they're rather like teenage girls ......PMS Now, this was Lady Morgain's first season with me....she was trying to get used to a new place, climate, food and room mates, so a little stressed too. I found her a bit nippy at this time but again, how much was changing house and how much was hormones, I will find out this year. She's now just a really sweet girl, I would say every bit as easy to handle as Lady "B"...not a real snuggler but has no problem being picked up snuggled quickly. I can pull her out of her nest as long as I call her name first and if she's really snoozy she will snuggle quite awhile She likes to do all her stretching and yawning, while you scritch choice places and rub her tummy . ciao

The DES works great to chemically castrate and usually stays longer with the jills than the hobs but there are exceptions, I did have one jill come in after about 9 months with an implant. The issues keeping a jill whole are you do have to watch for infections more that can become very serious very fast and do need to keep checking to make sure they are still out. And, if keeping a whole hob have to watch even closer as she might suddenly come back in. They do get more female attitudes during breeding season. But boy can they get you laughing at their antics on a hormone high!

As Heather has said they can live together ok the fun begins when one is brought out of season via a vas hob or jill jab lol then her cage mates become her babies and she quite happily drags them all in to her nest I have known some jills bring other females out of season by doing this ! but normally each one takes there turn at playing momma lol take care bye for now Bev

Nadia is now in season and she is going to get des and then be spayed after her birthday in may. She has this musty burnt odor. She is also super crabby to all the other ferrets except her group of 4. So far its not bad enough to isolate her or anything.

Best way to describe their attitude while in season...PMS. According to my husband (Pretty Mean Sucker), don't mess with the jill They're grumpy, pure and simple. Once brought out (jill jab, DES or V-hob), they get better humoured though still touchy and if they false then they get grumpy those last couple of days. Lady Morgain was an absolute treasure for about 24 hrs (you wanted to bury her ) Once she had her air babies she was fine, her humour improved and she was good to go again. They seem to take particular pleasure in trouncing the boys. There is nothing those poor boys can do right, while the wee girlies are in season ;D ciao
