It was on the Ferret Mailing List. A email group that goes out once a day. Not the friendliest list but I get it because several shelters post to it.

I can never get these types of links to come up for me so I can't see the post. Largo is right down the road from me. But I am in the same boat - I just don't know if we can take on another ferret right now. I've already lost two babies this year and my vet debt is HUGE at the moment (basically, all my vet bill credit cards are maxed out) and I still have a sickie on my hands.....Did it seem like the poor boy really needed a good home? I mean, of course he does, but was he in a bad way or did it seem like he was in a nice foster or something? Is there any other way to see this link? I went to the vet's website, the FB page, and the FML and I can't find anything about this lil boy.

SOOOO, my BF says we CANNOT have any more ferrets (it really broke his heart to lose our 2 boys this year, and even adopting Mischief a couple of months ago was almost impossible), but of course my curiousity got the better of me and I called the vet about this little boy Anywho, I found out some info on him - other than the known (18months old, albino, male) he was surrendered to the SPCA in Pinellas county who in turn turned him over to this vet office as the SPCA doesn't have space for exotic animals and this vet will take them in when they can (how sweet is that). Well, to make matters worse, this poor boy has adrenal disease and the SPCA asked the vet to do an adrenal surgery on him, which they did, and they are now trying to adopt him out and all they want for him is a $50 adoption fee. Poor boy! But I gotta say, for an 18 month old to have adrenal disease it is rather early isn't it??? From what I've read the surgery isn't really the best option as it will come back in the end. I asked them if they had him on deslorelin and/or lupron and they said they just did the surgery. Now I feel horrible for this little one. He is going to need to go to a home that can help him deal with his problems and know what to do to do so - so an educated ferrent. POOR BABY! What do you think his chances are being adrenal so young?

Sherry's Athena lived 3 1/2 years after diagnosis. Bob Church is advising that adrenal surgery and the des implant used together will give a ferret its best chance of survival. I haven't had a chance to read up on this statement.
Of course anyone who takes him would have to be willing to keep up his treatment. I know that someone had a 10 month old with adrenal, so yes it is young but not unheard of.

I would be tempted to do does implant if he were mine. It might help take some pressure off that right gland. He could become adrenal again or maybe he might live another 8 years and never have a problem with it. Its always a gamble with these guys. I have heard a lot of success and a lot of failure stories about adrenal surgeries.

Ferreholic, if you do adopt him, you can get a des implant in Tampa for $145 all said and done. You might need to do it every 6 months, but that's only about $25 a mo. Might even be able to go longer since the diseased gland has been removed and you'd be using the implant to prevent more tumors.

If you do get him, I highly recommend the Des. implant - will most likely save money in the long-run.

I went to see this lil boy tonight and I posted what he looked like and what his situation was on my post *18mo adrenal fert - what are his chances?*. For a quick run-down - his living situation is HORRIBLE (tiny cage, only one tiny blankie, newspaper for litter which is RIGHT next to the food dish and water bottle, and the sleeping area). He is healing up well from the adrenal surgery but he is really dirty and VERY yellow. His fur is patchy and he isn't in the best of health. HOWEVER, he is very bright-eyed and squirmy and acts like a normal fert, and he knows how to lay the guilt on with his super-sad booboo eyes.
ANYWHO, this little boy really needs a good home. It seems that he had a pretty bad life up until recently, and it still isn't great by any means (did I mention that his cage is near the front door of the vet office out in the open for all people and animals to bug him). I really don't think my BF is going to let me adopt this poor fellow, so if anyone on here can or if anyone knows someone who can adopt him I'd love to get the word out about him!!!
