Mom: (coming into kitchen) What is that smell? Me: Kidney. (grimace) Mom: I'm going to close the doors to the bedrooms. Me: Okay. Mom: And turn the kitchen fan on... and let down these curtains (curtains in doorway between kitchen and living room) Me: All right. Mom:(leaving into living room) Light some candles when you're done. Word for word. I got kidney, spleen, and liver for the ferrets, and oh my goodness I always forget just how stinky that stuff is. D: Soooo stinky... My hands finally stopped stinky this morning, after two scrub sessions and a bath. I'm happy I only have to do this every couple of months. I love how nonchalant my parents have become. Spleen in the fridge? Just shove it aside to look for the salsa. Extra half of a bread loaf? Double bag it and shove it in the garage freezer next to the mice. Doo doo doo... (I hope this is in the right forum D: Sorry if it isn't!)

Hahaha! That it is. Organ meat is so gaggable - texture, smell, BLECH. I'm just glad we have a separate freezer, and a drawer in our refrigerator for thawing the pet food!

I must admit I have become immune to the smell of organs. But man, the first time I got ground rabbit. *gags* I SCRUBBED my hands in burning hot water like 50 times, then again later. They still smelled the next day! Lamb stinks horrible as well. But rabbit is way worse.

If you have problems with the smell remaining on your skin why don't you wear gloves Organ meat does stink, it's the one thing I hate about, making up their ground mix. 2 lbs of organ meat, going through the blender is gross. Dehydrating it isn't much better though Rabbit reeks....totally disgusting....pork, beef and chicken organs have nothing on thawing rabbit Well, maybe rat (sorry for those that have the little sods as pets ) ciao

This is the first time I've been able to get spleen, too, and that is just the weirdest feeling organ ever. I'm used to slimy kidney and liver, but spleen is all... pebbly and strange. o__o I'm used to all the meat smells, and for some reason stinky mice don't get to me. But kidney? It's a horror. I think I'm going to invest in some sort of gas mask specifically for organ days. The only rabbit I get is already cleaned, and the meat part itself doesn't smell bad at all. I can't (and don't want to) imagine how whole ground rabbit smells. D: Jackie, I get my organs from a store called Produce World. There's only two and they're in the Chicago area (something I just found out, huh) and they're amazing with meat variety. I think they get whole animals (lambs, goats, calves, pigs) because they have a huge variety of organs and cuts and everything, any day of the week. I really lucked out with this place.

The only type of rabbit I get still has it's clothes on and it's insides still on the inside. Ground rabbit doesn't smell that bad actually, I just can't get any. Whole rabbit is better for them, but it makes me gag ciao

I mean it sucks, but I don't like gloves. And yes dehydrating is terrible! I had to move the dehydrator outside when I made treats at my Mom's house. I felt sick from the smell and couldn't eat because the smell made me gag. Once it is done it is done though, and the boys really enjoy the treats! My Mom's dogs did too! I tried to convince her her to switch them to a raw diet, but she said she doesn't have time. She admitted it is healthier though! I wish she would convert them. They have a great dane and a miniature schnauzer. Big dogs have so many health issues as it is and such short lives. And Holly, the schnauzer, would be sooo soft and sleek on raw! *shakes head* Oh well. All I can do I guess is give raw treats when I visit and know that when I can finally get a dog it will be on raw!

Stomach and instestines in the whole rabbit is what makes it stink. I've spoken with some people who use their ferrets for hunting and they say they actually remove the rabbit's stomach and intestines on the spot, to prevent the smell from permeating the meat. ciao

So rabbit minus the stomach and intestines = not bad smell wise? Maybe I can get the rabbits without the smelly stuff

It's not like they eat that anyway...that stuff if left in (made the mistake when feeding some baby rabbits) finds itself as "ferret decorations"...down the hall, on the wall ciao

Eh, the smells don't bother me as long as the meat is good. I didn't think rabbit really stank, but then again, I don't have a really sensitive nose.

Jackie- not so sure you want to get the "dressed" rabbit. At least not if it costs you what it does me! I can get approx 10 lbs of whole rabbit for about $13-$14. Dressed on the other hand, is $25 a kilo! Or about $11.30 a pound And yeah- it is the insides that reek so badly. I partially skin it, cut the top of the abdomen, and dump all the guts in the bag waiting just for that, tie it off, and carry on ;D And Zoshi- you're right, it does become so routine we don't even think about it ;D I'm glad your mom and family are so good with it, too
