I defiantly find this very interesting. I haven't read the whole thread yet as I am at work and know I won't be able to pay full attention to it at this time.
However I think I have been lucky with my ferrets. The will take whatever Olive Oil I give them, type or brand. I normally get EVOO in a 1L bottle at the local store for under $5, this is for the ferrets. I get another slightly pricier bottle, same size for my baking. If I run out of oil for the ferrets I just use the baking stuff. It's a different brand then the ferrets, and I find the flavor or it doesn't affect the baking, hence the two different bottles, but they never seem to noticed the change. lol
I know this is really off topic but as for the Extra Virgin Coconut Oil I have never given this to the ferrets. I use it in my cooked. I started when I was cooking for my Grandmother. I watched a thing about a woman, who was a Doctor who's husband had Alzheimer. She researched and did home tests with all sorts of foods to try and help him. He had completely lost his independence and was no longer able to pass the clock test. The results they got with the Coconut Oil where amazing. Grandma was pretty far along but we tried it. It did seem to help a little. Alzheimer starts 20-30 years before the signs show and adding 1-2tablesppons of this to your daily diet seems to help. I don't use that much but I try to use a little in each dinner meal even now. For example I made perogies last night and fried then with the Olive Oil. It's not costly the way I use it and if it helps it is worth it.

Yeah I have found coconut oil to have beneficial effects on me, especially helping control my blood sugar.
I suspect it might have beneficial effects on the ferrets too, if you don't use too much, but I don't think we have any studies to prove that or anything. If nothing else, it seems harmless to them.
It is very mild and they actually really like the taste...

I might see if the kids will take some.
I don't find it has much of a flavor unless I fry it in. I can melt a little over a hot meal and I don't notice it at all. One suggested way to get the suggested amount per days was in coffee so my boyfriend tried that but he really didn't like it at all.

Interestingly, when I purchased coconut oil before at the grocery store (a cheaper brand) it had pretty much no flavor, but had a nice smell.
But this time I bought a more expensive, organic extra-virgin brand (shown in my picture above), and this one actually has more coconut flavor lol...
I don't really notice the flavor when I cook with it, except for a buttery / fatty flavor. Mainly it's the smell that is always there when I cook with it. But if I taste the oil by itself it has a bit of a coconut flavor.

Our local grocery store(the one we prefer) doesn't carry it and I have never thought to look anywhere else. The Health store carries an organic one but I don't find it tastes like coconut, which for me is good cuz I don't like Coconut.

That was very educational hehe. It really was a lot if good information and a great scientific study! It was really funny reading this right after this email I got from my father--he's planning a reunion and has mapped out everyone's location and found a location that is roughly the same distance from each family member. He emailed everyone all these numbers and equations! Some people! Way to go above and beyond! I think I'll have to keep an eye out for coconut oil. Is this something I could find at Safeway? Or do I need to go to a more natural grocery store?

At Safeway you could probably find LouAna brand coconut oil, it's not as high-grade but it's probably fine. We are not 100% sure what the effect of coconut oil is on ferrets but I've been using it for probably a year so I doubt it hurts, and it might be good for them. Wish we knew for sure! :S

Pumpkin seed oil is tasty I bought a bottle for my gran to try cooking with. My next thing to try will be tea oil. I've heard that it's quite delicious for cooking with and even adding some to desserts to replace the regular oil or drizzling it over ice cream. I can't wait to get a bottle. Yureiavalon, have you ever tried giving any to your fuzzies as a supplement or treat? No, because I don't have any on hand. The only store I've seen it in locally is the German Deli. I'd probably have to order it online, and really there are so many things higher on the list right now that I need to get first. Like new work shoes that aren't falling apart on my feet. Yikes! ;D

Mine only attack my feet when I have shoes or slippers on. All they really want is to chew on the rubber soles.

I found some coconut oil today at Marshall's of all places (which is funny since its for my Marshall's ferret). It's very thick.
Alfie only attacks my feet if they are covered by a blanket. In my shoes, he just tries to steal the shoes of my feet. Uncovered, he knows not to bite me. Covered: they are free game!

Very interesting and informative thread!
Sorry to eh, necro-post on it, and ressurect it from the depths of the Forum, but I had to comment because...
We have a bottle of Kroger brand EVOO in our kitchen cabinet. So I tried giving some to Serenity. At first she was unsure so I dipped my finger in and rubbed a bit on her nose and mouth to see if she might get a taste for it. Then she approached the little cup and stuck her nose in to get a smell, and then she started lapping it...
Then literally almost a second later, she leaped back from it as though the oil itself had attacked her. Suddenly she was thrashing about and hacking and coughing and spitting it all up all over the place!
Ok, so no EVOO for Serenity! lol
Helped her clean her nose off and she went and poked at the water bottle then went and crawled into the back corner.. poor girl.. lol
Then I did a google on "ferret refuses olive oil" and one of the first 3 hits that Google gave me was this thread!
