He's never eaten anything but kibble, but recently I decided I'd like him to eat some freeze dried raw and freeze dried raw treats. His normal kibble is a mix of wysong Epigen 90 and ferret evo. His normal treats came from petco and are called ferretvites. They're heart shaped and mostly sugar, I'm sure.
I ordered Wysongs freeze dried dream treats, archetypal 1, and the variety pack of their canned. (duck, venison, turkey, beef, chicke, and rabbit). He refuses to eat the chunks of dream treats so I have started putting pieces in his old treat bag to make them smell the same. He still wouldn't take them. I put two new treats and one old treat in a pile, and got very excited when I watched him pick up (and proceed to run away with) the new treat. However, he stopped in his tracks when he realized it wasn't the "right" treat and came back to get the old one. Any suggestions on how I can get him to accept a new treat?
As far as the canned goes, I started with duck figuring it would be a good choice. He definitely seemed very interested in the smell and even stuck around for a minute, sniffing. He did however refuse to eat any of it. I've tried for a few days I'm a row now with no success on getting him to try the canned food. Hot, cold, with water, without water. Today I mixed it with some warm water and some of his kibble. He's still very interested in the smell but will not eat it. I also should add that two nights ago, I left the canned in his cage overnight (less than a spoonful in a bowl), and he tried to drag the bowl away, up a whole story and into his pirate hat.
Am I doing something wrong? Any other tips? He's always been very stubborn about anything new, he didn't even want the Epigen 90 when I switched to that, but I didn't give him much choice. I'm too big of a chicken to take away the kibble and force him to eat canned though. Should I just keep doing what I'm doing?
With the archetypal 1- I've been mixing it in layers with his kibble in small amounts. Normal I would fill the bowl as needed, but because I'm introducing someone new, I've been adding food to his bowl as needed 2x a day. He's eaten everything in his bowl with it mixed at. 25% archetypal/ 75% Epigen ratio, and today I moved up to about a 50/50 ratio. I'm not rehydrating it, so I think that may be why he's accepted it. It's similar to kibble.
Sorry, for the long post! It's been quite the week here. Noah even went to the cirque du ferret in MA this weekend and got to see other ferrets for the first time! Did any of you go?
