So most people who cannot feed their cats raw, feed canned right?
Well how come no one really does/suggests this for ferrets? Is there something I'm missing? I would think that canned would be the next best thing for a ferret just as it is for cats.

Maybe because there is no canned ferret food ? I don't know why that is. There is canned cat food out there with mostly meat right? ciao

I tried feeding Rolo high quality canned cat food - he wouldn't touch it.

I would guess that they have to be orientated to it the same way as raw? Canned cat food smells so bad Can you imagine what a ferret would smell like after being on canned ....actually....dry ferret food smells too ciao

I would be questioning the high water content even in high quality canned cat food, they need to eat more to get enough nutrition. I think EVO has a 95% meat formula, but I would look at the moisture percentage. Also bone or eggshell etc would have to be added, right? And on labelling have to check if it is for supplemental feeding (no added vitamins) or if it is a complete diet.

You probably won't find bone, but you will find a ton of supplements, most of them designed (supposedly) to cover those nutritional needs. You won't find most people disecting a can of cat food...so the manufacturer will (for most) create a cat food designed to cover at least their basic needs. The moisture content in the cat food is the necessary amount needed to keep good hydration....think about the moisture content of raw meat. I would be less concerned about the moisture content and more concerned with what went into the cat food itself....meat, plant forms and such. My complaint....you're relying on a company who's ultimate goal is to make money, not keep your animal healthy ciao

I've wondered this, too, since we tried and failed to get our cats to switch to raw and now feed a canned food diet for them. Gotta say, though kibble diet (even marshall's) poos smell better than high quality canned food poos do, dear god >:C (at least that's been my experience)

That was why I fed kibbles to my cats originally....the stink of the litter box of a cat on moist cat food would put you out of the house ciao

I have to say, we feed both kibble and wet to our cats... their poos are not overly nasty by any means.....

We feed Wellness Core wet to our cats, and the stools are no worse smelling than on kibble, but they are smaller. As for the moisture, they really do need that amount. Cats get virtually all moisture from their diet, and ferrets most of it from their's.

I didn't notice a poop odor or issue when my cat was on canned, for feeding ferrets I would say it's more an issue that canned is expensive and you can't leave it out all the time. Plus whereas cats are really prone to kidney and bladder issues, it's less common in ferrets.

I used to give Alfie a little bit of decent canned cat food (I looked for one that was pretty much just meat) mixed in with his high quality kibble. His poos weren't that bad... Or so I though... Now that he's eating raw I keep forgetting to clean his litter box because it never smells!
I don't think it would be a good staple as it was just meat, and you need all the other parts too.

I have fed the ferrets the cats canned a handful of time when I forgot to thaw meat or it didnt thaw all the way. There is no bone but I think of it as like a "muscle meal" I also used to but them the 95% meat EVO B4 I stopped trusting them. I have also bought them wysong aus ju. Poos were never bad. I always mix in a little warm water to make it more of a gravy instead of paste which they hate. Some of the aus ju dont need any added water. Mostly canned is just for emergency or treat. I wouldn't make it a major part of their diet.

I guess that's kinda what I mean.
Why is kibble recommended instead of a high quality canned food?
