I forgot how horrible ferrets on Marshall's kibble smell! ESPECIALLY how absolutely TERRIBLE ferrets detoxing from MF kibble smell. I cannot believe how awful the babies smell. I was literally searching for poop in the cage because even after I cleaned the litter box the playroom smelled so horrific. Their bodies stink too. It's like sour milk and vomit and poop. Barf! It's no wonder ferrets have such a bad rep for being so stinky! I know the bug they have doesn't help any either. I hope getting them on abx helps the smell. It's a good thing they get a month to detox at my house before going to my parents! Though it certainly won't make the roommate search any easier... I am SO glad my mom is feeding raw. I can already see the difference in just a week. Hagrid's coat is so much softer. Hazel's cost is much nicer too. You can tell the difference between their ages by smell too. Hagrid is older and thus was on MF kibble longer, and he smells much worse than Hazel. Granted Hazel has about two weeks on him for eating raw, but he smells a ton worse than she did at the same stage of the game. I'm sure it will take him longer to detox as well. I can't wait to have the playroom smelling normal again! lol I feel so terrible for ferrets who get fed Marshall's s**t.

Yeah I can see too why some people might initially feel discouraged about the smell after switching to raw. The worse the kibble they were on, and the longer, the worse the detox will be it seems. Don't lose heart - the extra-bad awful detox smell WILL go away as they filter the rest of the kibble toxins out of their systems and you will have beautiful, healthy ferrets!

I remember that vividly with Sonny. Omg the smell was awful and he was only 9 weeks old! WHAT DO THEY PUT IN THAT KIBBLE? it smells like fish to me. Rotten fish. Then when they are detoxing it smells like fish and the monkey cages at the zoo.

sour milk and vomit and poop. Barf! That describes the detox smell my younger ones were giving off exactly. Awful. Hard to play with them when they smell that bad.

Yup, still going through this myself with out 3 young newbies. The baby kits aren't too bad, though Sigma was definitely sour milkish last night when I kissed his head. Wheatley is just awful smelling.
Luckily our poo is smelling less and less for all of our ferrets I've noticed. Haven't got my first whiff of grapetail from anyone yet.

Our new guys are pretty much finished with their detox thank heavens! It was bad for a while there. And katt- that description is SO accurate. Haven't got my first whiff of grapetail from anyone yet. This usually takes a few months to a year on full raw before you start to notice it

Ahh ok. Some of us don't look too different yet on the raw, the kits show the biggest improvements and the most quickly, probably because they are growing right now. It's only been what, a month maybe though? I imagine it will take a few to really see a big difference. Early adopters like Chell and Glados have clearly made improvements though, adding on their winter fat and coat changes. I love how Chell has turned into a poofy monster of a jill- she has THE cutest bottle brush tail when she's excited. I've been trying so hard to get a picture/video of it.

HAHA, if only this post was started a day ago I wouldn't have been so worried about my Bandit. I just wrote a thread about how he smelled HORRIBLE, like he'd been rolling around in dog poo! UGH! I LOVE my baby, but I simply can't put my nose anywhere near his neck right now or I gag. It's ATROCIOUS! I wonder if that is why Mischief (our newbie) keeps sniffing and biting at Bandit's neck too. He just won't leave him alone - moreso than the past month. Maybe he's just sayin, "Hey man, you STINK. You need to fix that. Here, I'll help *chomp*

Marshals ferret mix is an old recipe that was originally fed to mink to create fantastic coats. Yes, it does have fish in it (think every garbage fish and scrap parts and you can bet that goes into the food ) Fish is a major component in a mink diet. There is nothing like the stench of a ferret who's eaten that crap all their lifes. I've had a couple surrendered who ate nothing but that stuff. Ladies Pooka and Babushka...oh, they stank. Strangely enough though....Lady Babushka was 9 yrs old (had proof of their ages), Lady Pooka was 7 1/2 when they were turned in (that was a heartbreaking rescue ...to be turned into a shelter because your person doesn't want to see them die and would sooner let them die with a stranger ) ciao

Wow, am I glad Alfie didn't go through detox! He used to smell a bit, and now I don't smell him at all!
It's kinda bad, at times though, the other day I found a spot he's been pooping in--there's quite a bit of poo! But it doesn't smell, so I had no idea!

I call that smell the "devil's butt" smell. It's pretty awful. Thatcher still reeks like that, it's worse than BO and worse than urine. It's awful.
