Got a call from our vet on Friday as I was on my way out of town to visit family. The labs came back and confirmed Cancer. I forget the exact kind, my brain was pretty numb, I believe it was a lymphoma of some sort, they said it had spread throughout his entire body and had probably been going for a year or so. Still so hard to say goodbye, but at least now we know there was nothing more we could have done. Even if we had caught it at the very beginning he was such an old man he would never have made it though the surgery. I got a call just a few hours ago to let me know his remains have been returned to the vet and are ready for us to pick up and bring home. It still hurts to think that all I will have left of him are fond memories and a small clay jar. But at least he is pain free and healthy now. Thank for all the well wishes, we miss him, but everyone is coping well and eating well. I think I may be the worse off, but at least they keep me smiling.

It does help to know for sure 100% that there was NOTHING you could have done. Doesn't make the hurt go away, but it does help to ease things a bit. I also find bringing their cremains home if you can't bury them on the property also helps with a sort of closure. I'm glad your others have learned how to cope. Now for the hard part- YOU learning how to cope without him. And it is difficult {{{{{hugs}}}}}

It's not much comfort... but there is the little bit to know you did all you could and in the end you made the RIGHT CHOICE in such a difficult place.
When cancer is involved, in the end... painfree is the best you can achieve.
