My neighbour brought me a pigeon yesterday that his cat had killed and brought in. His cat is a very good bird killer, so it's unlikely the bird was sick. I was wondering whether you consider road kill and animals brough in by cats and dogs safe for ferrets to eat? Worker ferret here are normally fed a diet of rabbit, pigeon and anything that their owners hunt, and as long as they get regulalrly wormed and flead, there never seems to be a problem.
If I or another driver accidently knocked a pheasant over and killed it for example (so I know cause and time of death), it would be safe to feed to the fuzzies, right? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My guys got a partridge that was hit out front of my house. It was fresh, I saw it happen. Took a jack rabbit that a fellow hit (he picked it up at the time). He was driving out my way so he just dropped it off. I cleaned it and threw it in the freezer. A friend of mine feeds her wolfhounds that way. She managed to score a deer a few weeks ago. She's now got a freezer full of venison (you have the option if you hit the deer to add it to your freezer, the fellow didn't want it). You have to be very careful. It's got to be very fresh and in this weather (I know yours isn't the same as ours but still) I mean just happened. I always clean and freeze. They get the meat 2 or 3 weeks later. It doesn't happen often. I never use any of the song birds that I happen to find as I don't know if they're window kill or if it's West Nile kill. Those go straight in the garbage ciao

I would be worried about what sorts of things the animal ate in its life... like pesticides in bugs or fertilizers on grass.

That's why it's not advised to feed an animal found dead. If you know for example, a bird hit the window and died from that- you freeze it for a few weeks to make sure any parasites are killed off.

Did the cat bite it do you know? Cat saliva is filled with tons of really bad bacteria that could probably make a ferret sick. It's why cat bites can be lethal - the saliva can cause blood poisoning.
Still if you froze it for like, a month, it might be ok....
