Kahlua's eyes have been burgandy since I adopted her Jan 2010, they were burgandy when TTFR and I did our first ferret meetup in early Feb 2011 and she can tell you because we were talking colors and I pointed out to TTFR that Kahlua was the only sable ferret ive ever seen with burgandy eyes. They were burgandy a few weeks ago too but now they are black. Pitch black. In my sig they're black but that was just the lighting and I remember when I took that picture I thought to myself "She looks weird with black eyes." annnd now no lie they are black. I have taken her into various different lighting and they are still black. I showed TTFR the other night when she came over so she can vouch for me. I know that she has always had vision issues so thats why its a little concerning to me. Is this something that I should be concerned with?

It's not a concern. All three of my sables have black eyes unless under certain light conditions they turn burgundy. Ferrets can have burgundy eyes under the right conditions and usually isn't a concern.
I'm sure Sherry or Heather or Jackie will come on and provide some more answers!

I've never heard of a ferret's eye colour changing, but if people's can, don't see why a ferret's can't. I don't imagine it's a problem, unless her pupil is staying so enlarged that the eye is showing black. A vet would be the best one to tell you that, though.

@bibliophiliac- Ive brought her into several different lighting situations and they havent gone back to burgandy at all which makes no sence since they have always been burgandy (now suddenly black) Its not that I just looked at her one day and they were burgandy instead of black, its that they are now black and no longer burgandy and it cant be lighting because ive taken her into all kinds of lighting and looked.
@sherry- I dont think its her pupil, that was kind of my worry (so are cataracts) having a vet check her out wouldnt be a bad idea.. i couldnt find anything on ferrets eye color changing and so I knew id sound crazy when I asked.. lol sorry if i sound like an over protective nut

Hey you don't sounds like a nut at all! We are ALL overprotective here so no worries there! I would be concerned too. I think a vet check would certainly not hurt. How are you sure it is not a pupil thing? Is there a GENTLE light you could shine on her to see ifthe pupils change? Not that they would necessarily if she had some dilation issue goig on but never hurts to check. And btw I do NOT mean shine a light in her eyes directly of course, I mean more like have her in a low light room and then As you watch her eyes move her underneath a really bright lamp or something. You don't want to shine a light right in her eyes ESP if she is already having pupil dilation issues as you could harm her eye. I'm sure you know that though, but for any reader who may not I just want to be sure that is clear. On the note of unusual color changes, Kenai's Nose completely changed color from when he was a kit. I've told and shown several ppl (on Skype lol) and no one has heard of hat happening. When I brought him home I called him Four-Foot-Two-Face (his Indian name ) because of his mitts and his nose was half pink, half dark brown. A few moths later I noticed his once beautiful nose was Completely pink with only the faintest brown T visible. What happened to the dark half?! Haha I was looking at it last night and the part that used to be dark but turned pink looks like it is getting a little mottling coming in so maybe he is going to get the dark spot back? Haha I sure hope so! Anyways, I just wanted to share the odd body part color changes. Maybe it is something similar with the eyes?

I hope its something simple! I guess nothing is impossible. Tequila is an all white chihuahua who has black spots on his ears and in the summer time they come up on his butt too. Also in the summer time when he gets wet his skin kind of resembles a dalmation, lol. He has way more spots in the summer than the winter on his skin. Ive done that eye test on people and dogs, lol but I totally didnt even think to do it with her- its a good idea, thank you for reminding me it exsists. Im going to have to do that now when I get home, lol. The reason I say im pretty sure its not her pupils is kind of hard to explain, I just know her eyes and it doenst look like her pupil (if that makes sence at all) i cant figure out quite how to xplain it. I mean its certainly a possibility but it just doesnt look like it. Yea physically pupils are black and now her eyes are too but they dont have the same look as pupils. Im probably making less and less sence. I really cant explain it, lol.

Well then that I can see why you are worried. I agree, take her to the vet or at least call the vet and ask if they have any clue why that would happen. You don't sound nuts. About every week I find something that worries me on my 4 lol. We are just protective parents, so no worries.

After which he had a little stuffy nose and I was so worried I didnt even realize it was near bout 11pm and I was ready to go to petsmart and get some of the respritory stuff. I put the vaporizor in their room though and he was fine by the next morning

I've had silvers and a couple of exotics (Aremis (mutt) and Attila) who's eyes have changed colours. I've never had a sable who's changed eye colour. Usually the change went from dark to burgundy but I can't see a reason considering the depth of the colour why it shouldn't appear the other way around. If you're concerned with this definitely take the wee one to the vet. As Sherry posted, if you think it's an unresponsive pupil then yes definitely and quickly as it usually implies some neurological issue ciao

i have a few ferts with Ruby eyes and they have never changed- i would ask your vet if there is any condition that would cause this. It could be a pre medical condition or nothing at all. Best to call & ask.
