Not sure if this is the right spot for this, but anyways... I have been on a quest to find a gate (like a baby gate) that will keep my ferrets from getting into the kitchen. I'd like to let them run around in the living room, but they can get right into the kitchen and behind the fridge Has anyone found a gate that will work? I got one of the standard wooden ones first, but Dexter can scale right up it And I just recently got a fancy metal one but the bars are too far apart and they both just slip right through! Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

My tiniest girls, like Jackie's, could get through that, but it's an easy fix. Out of 10, only Boris could jump it. And it would take him a while, so if supervised you can get to them before they can get over.

OK I need to get a picture of my rolo-proofed gate for you guys. It's one of those lattice slidey kind that pressure mount wherever you need them. I duct taped coroplast to the one side, after cutting the pieces to the perfect size so that the gate still functions completely normally, only the one side is completely sheer and cannot be climbed. You can probably get the gate super cheap/free off craiglist or similar, and the coroplast should be less than $5-10. I'll try to get my dad to take a picture of it.

Mine was also"sheer". He would keep jumping straight up til he could hook his paws over the edge then pull himself over

Thanks everyone for your tips! sheilaamistone1974, that is exactly the type of gate I'm looking for! Wasn't even sure if such a thing existed I was willing to rig something up to make it work if I had to, but figured there had to be a gate out there that would just work right off the bat. That one has no place to put little paws to climb up and it's extra tall so no jumping to the top! Yay, you have solved my dilemma!

sheilaamistone1974's gate is the much prettier version of what I turned mine into. My dad sent me some pictures of what it looks like. My version was free for me though, we were given the baby gate and my mom got the coroplast from work so I figured, ferret gate! Only downside to these gates is that they are very tall, so you have to be able to step over them. If you have (human) kids in the house or the elderly it is a pain to constantly take it down for them.

I use the safe 1st gate as well. As long as I put it on the inside of the doorjam Socks can't get through the space on the one side. Mind you I live in an older home so I'm not sure newer homes have door jams as wide as mine.

Buy a baby gate and put plywood on it Seeming we have dredged this thread up from the dark ages, I figured I would add my two cents for posterity. As @bonniencylde suggested, essentially what I did at the previous house for the girls to run around in the bathroom during the day (everything in there is on epic lock down, they most certainly couldn't get in the toilet, cupboards, etc.). Except I used MDF, same idea though. It took a little fiddling to make it work as you do have to cut the wood to shape to make sure the gate works properly afterwards. In the end I think the gate cost about AU$40 and the sheet of MDF cost about AU$6. It took me about 35\40mins to get it set up how I wanted it. Wasn't perfect... which annoyed me but it did the job. Initially I made the cover the same height as the gate, around 850mm (2'9.5") from memory. For 6 or 7 months, while they were still fairly young, that was enough. In the end I had to remake the covering to extend it up to about 1100mm (3'7.3") as my bigger girl Cindy decided that she could jump up to the edge and pull herself over. Luckily I generally work from home, scared the crap out of me when she came running across my desk! This is a picture of how it looked originally: I initially planned on painting it (make it pretty ), but it just never happened.
