I've been searching high and low over the internet trying to find something concrete on saw palmetto for ferret prostate health. If anyone here has some links or info on this, it would be much appreciated. The only info I found is that it can sometimes be better than the prescription drug for enlarged prostates, and a couple posts I found along the way specify a few drops per day as the dosage, but nothing concrete such as mg/ml. Any help is appreciated!

I can't offer you any advice regarding amounts or dosages. I have used it and it appeared to work (I used capsules at the time). The problems with most prostate issues is that they are a secondary issue that is part of advanced adrenal. If you treat the adrenal with lupron this often helps with the enlarged prostate. At the moment all my adrenal kids are on des implants and only one is male. He has not appeared to have any issues with the enlarged prostate so I've not made use of the prostate fighting saw palmetto and am hoping that the des implant will be dealing with any issues that he may have ciao

Dean had a slightly enlarged prostate before I got him a deslorelin implant, he was running around peeing little puddles everywhere. After the des? He's perfectly fine, doesnt require any additional medication.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure if the des implants offered the same protection from prostate inflammation that the lupron did but I was hoping that this was indeed the case. Captain Jack had not shown any prostate issues as of yet so I couldn't tell that part of it did indeed work ciao

I tried saw palmetto. I used it for months and it didn't work. The prostate problems got do bad with advanced adrenal that I had no choice but to put my ferret to sleep. He was on lupron, melatonin and deslorelin. He was on propecia (finasteride) and flutamide for the enlarged prostate. They worked for a short time but in the end nothing worked anymore. Not des, lupron, melatonin or any of the prostate meds. I did keep him going for another 3+ years with those medications though.

The best one (prescription) to use is propecia. my uncle claims that saw palmetto works for his prostate. so I would not dismiss it entirely and there is a lot of literature out there about human use. The Indians in Florida have been using it for hundreds of years. I'm just saying that it did not work for my ferret.

I think I have some info on the Saw Palmetto from IFC 2006. I will check at home tonight for you. It was a hand out at the seminar.
I have used propecia in past on my Marhsall boy.

they sell a liquid saw palmetto extract in one of those natural vitamin shops online. i tried saw palmetto and nettle extract on my ferret. i don't think that either worked on him but it was worth a try as i was desperate and willing to try anything. i eventually had to move onto the hard stuff and had to get propecia and flutamide for him. stinging nettle extract should NOT be used on a ferret with insulinoma as it is known to lower blood sugar. actually, if you get the palmetto or nettle extracts you should get the alcohol and sugar free one (which they do make by the way). saw palmetto berries are starchy and they have sugar. they are all over the place down here and the quaker parrots eat them. hmmm those parrots must have really small prostates..... LOL.

I think what you saw with your boy was the slow progression of the adrenal disease. I think in the end nothing will work, we just use up our options. I used the saw palmetto for Mad Max. It worked for about a year for him along with melatonin, we then tried lupron which had no effect at all. The next thing we tried was the propecia and flutemide. They worked about 6 months. What finally took him down was actually a bladder cancer something that seemingly isn't common in ferrets but his little body was riddled with cancers on most of his major organs. If it hadn't been that something else would have claimed him in a very short time. He lived a good long life though as he was about 11 when he finally passed on. ciao

Dr. Petra M Burgmann, BSe, DVM, Dip SBVP of Toronto, ON gave a presentation on the role of complementary medicine in ferret health at the ferret aid - 2006. In the hand out she mentions saw palmetto. I hope this helps.

Out of curiosity- why isn't the prostate simply removed in the males if surgical intervention is used for adrenal surgery in the first place?

Good question, I've no idea I'm sure there must be a reason because I've never heard of it occurring and I'm sure someone would have thought of it by now if it could be done ciao

Thanks for the replies. Haven't been able to find the drops, seems only the stores around her have the pills.
