I am seriously having a bad time with my girls going in the litter box and need some help retraining them!
While I'm not NEW to litter training, I feel like I have gotten really rusty. Mimosa, who is about 7, has slowly gotten worse and worse about going in the litter box. She was VERY hard to train. For a couple of years she got up to about 80% in the box, while her brother was nearly 100%. Since we rescued Mable and Midna in November, though, she has totally forgotten. Midna, my kit, is great about going in the right spot. She's also the one who has totally taken to the raw feeding.
Mabel, on the other hand, is very weird. I know prior to getting her she was kept in cedar bedding and seldom got out. She has the strongest aversion to a litter box I have ever seen. If I try to set her in the box when she makes like she needs to go, she FREAKS OUT and will hold it up to 15 minutes until I'm not looking and run off to go someplace else. I have tried putting different litters in the box and even just making the bottom level of their cage a poopy bin. She was somewhat ok with that, but when I try to take things up to the next level (putting the litter only in several pans on the bottom level) she will not cooperate. She only likes to go on the plastic cage trays and carpeting. Occasionally she will go on the linoleum we put down the the corners of the room for emergency poops.
The only methods I know of are 1) making sure only the litter pan smells like poop, (although they are going on the plastic so much these days I think the plastic has permanently absorbed a residual smell of doodoo and pee) and 2) I try to put them in the box when I see them going. Ialso try 3) rewarding them when they go in the right place. Nothing is working. I'm getting so weary of cleaning doodoo from the plastic and carpet every single day! HELP!!
