We have a large dog run that we no longer use as it was built for our guard dog that has since passed on. RIP Max
So we decided to make it into a ferret palace, and a bird aviary as well.
It is 14 x 10 feet, so each will have 7 x 10 and it is 6 foot high.
The cockatiels & ferrets have lived side by side before, and they were all happy. The birds kept Ozzie company & amused while he was in rut and living alone. They don't think of them as food, so they have never attacked the cage wall. One little guy used to groom Ozzie while he lying close to their wall, so sweet. He died last week of unknown cause, very sad as I bred him 5 years ago.
The side of the ferret house, behind the house in my plan will be all mesh for ventilation. When it starts to get cold, we will cover it with a colourbond or clear sheet so that I can open it up thru the day, and close it of a night or when raining. The other walls will be as you see it in the photo's, with mesh added over the top of the existing heavy weight ringlock mesh. The roof will be clear.
The grass area will be paved around the edge, with some grass left. As we need a jack hammer to dig it up to level it all, we figured they would not tunnel out of the solid clay concrete like ground. My husband can not put a pick into it, it is very hard. They will have lots of different levels to play on, lots of pipe to run through at varying heights and lots of toys.
I think they will be happy.
The aviary will have the lower part of the dividing wall covered with clear roofing, to stop the ferrets climbing it. They will have lots of nice toys, shelter boxes, snuggle tubes, fresh branch perches, bird bath and I will get some quails as well as they keep the floor area clean. They might even hatch some young ones for ferret dinner, lol.
Construction starts today, with a trip to the hardware to get the roofing, and more mesh if we run out. Everything else we have already.
Should be fun
Total Cost so far = $30
The grassed area is the ferrets
On the right side bottom end I have the tap & hose close by. On the top end I have an outdoor power point, handy if I can get a safe heated bedding pad, or I might get them a kennel with under floor heating for winter. Also good to have a light out there too.
Looking into the aviary section, it is messy right now
My plan , with safe entry door way on the outside so I don't take up space in the play area. Love the little ferrets too, lucky it had them in my Cad drawing software.
