While perusing Craigslist I found this ad about a missing white ferret. The people that found him/her (they don't know) took it to animal control, and so he is being kept there under 10 day quarantine because he/she is a biter and the workers suspect he/she is "crazy". Chances are these people have no experience with ferrets, especially a biter, and I worry about his chances at being placed into foster/getting adopted out if left there. If anyone in Toronto/High Park area has contacts with the Ferret Aid Society or is willing to contact animal services and offer to foster/adopt the ferret's intake number is A618434, and Toronto Animal Services South Region number is 416-338-6668 I got this info a few days ago, so I'm hoping that someone has been able to make plans to adopt/foster him, but in case anyone on here is in the area and in a position to take him I figured I would post this anyway. Hope the ferrets find a loving home. Me too, I would take him myself but my apartment currently doesn't allow animals My own ferret Rolo is at home with my parents until I can move into an apartment (fingers crossed within the next month) that allows pets.

Just emailed Randy (Ferret Aid) hopefully she can move or already has moved on this. Quite often the local shelters get hold of her as she's the major ferret shelter in the area. I will let you know if I hear anything. ciao

Hi Guys Just got back from talking with Randy at Ferret Aid. She says they will go and talk to them tomorrow. They usually call her once the quarantine is up but she says she will try and talk them into fast tracking her and try and get her ADV test done while she's in quarantine. That means that she will be in a foster home sooner. Thanks for the heads up, it may have just saved a wee one. ciao

No they're an odd bunch to say the least.....that whole episode was disturbing to put it mildly. I believe there was a total overhaul but I still find them upsetting. I had a friend go down there during an adoptathon they were holding. She got turned down because she wouldn't take on one of their sick dogs, instead of one of the healthy puppies (the dog had severe allergy issues, same breed that she was looking for...she said it looked like it had mange, open oozing sores, no fur but that's how bad the allergies were) She had just finished dealing with a sick dog for the last 3 yrs as her old fellow went down hill, so was looking for a dog without health issues that would cause more heartache. They told her if she wouldn't take that dog then she didn't really want a dog very badly. It may have been a test but a cruel one. She felt horrible leaving the dog there and even worse for being turned down but just wasn't up to doing the whole mental and financial rollercoaster right after the death of her previous dog. As she said, if the puppy had turned out to be ill or sickly then she would have dealt with it but to take on a dog that was already so sickly and no one else could find a solution for was just beyond her capabilities of dealing with. She was terribly upset by the whole thing as she really has a kind heart and if her dog had come up with allergies would have seen it through to the end but to take on an animal that was already that sick...she couldn't do it. ciao

She was terribly upset by the whole thing as she really has a kind heart and if her dog had come up with allergies would have seen it through to the end but to take on an animal that was already that sick...she couldn't do it. ciao Yeah I'm a bit leery about them too... I mean I've been to the shelter post-overhaul, and even attended a dog walkers orientation (figure I can help them out while getting exercise) and the animals seem as ok as they can be living in cages without much attention. The biggest change is that they are now not a "no kill" shelter like before, they are just trying to be a "low kill" shelter. Basically, if an animal is suffering they will euthanize it now. This is supposed to prevent situations like the 13 year old dog that had a cancerous leg amputated and was forced to re-learn how to walk on its three remaining arthritic limbs. Something that I noticed about the dogs though, was that a lot of them seemed to have diarrhea and there was vomit in one of the dog's kennels. I don't know how long it was in there without anyone going in to clean those dogs up..... Anyway, at the same time they have a very high adoption rate, with animals from other shelters getting transferred in all the time because they have a better chance of getting adopted. Supposedly their average turnaround with most healthy dogs is only 3 days in the shelter, so even though I have a lot of misgivings about them, they are still saving a lot of animals' lives. I don't know if I'll be able to volunteer there though... I just get so depressed going to the cat floor and seeing hundreds of cats just sitting in cages fake-sleeping out of stress. I just can't understand why people don't just spay and neuter their cats - in terms of medical expenses you will end up paying over the life of the cat, it's really not that expensive, and it's not like it's an unexpected expense either. Anyway, I'm really happy to hear that Randy/Ferret Aid will move on this that little guy really deserves a better chance than he will get at the THS.
