I was at Petco and they had just gotten a new batch of babies in. Everybody was sound asleep except one cinnamon baby. He was trying to find an ear to chew on while he tried to go to sleep. I've read enough on here to know the babies are sent away too young and this one has decided that ears are kind of like mommy. Is there any way to amend this behavior? Maybe a mommy substitute or something?

I've had three ear nursers. I found that rubbing vaseline containing vit. e into the ear of the victim (lol) was enough to deter the nurser. It also had a side benefit of helping heal the damage. Granted, some kits might LIKE the taste, and applying will just give them an incentive ... but at the time it was all I had and it happened to work

Hi the best deterant is sudocreme ( would look odd on pet store ferrets though as its white lol ) would the pet store allow you to give some home made slightly softned jerky ? ( raw meat may put buyers off but a dried jerky looks like a dog/cat treat ) having this too suck chew on keeps them busy and acts like a soother instead of the ear and is good for them hope this helps take care bye for now bev

Hmmm, Bev took my idea...well it was her that introduced me to using sudocreme. It works very well for the little ear suckers. Poor wee mites, they just want their mommas back ciao

As a breeder it just tears my heart out to hear of the little ones weaned so young. Not sure what the pet store would let you do for him, but a clock in a soft blankie is comforting

Oz did this when he was a baby. I hate that they get taken so early from their mommas.

I went back to Petco and looked for Sudocreme. They don't have it, but one of my favorite managers there said he would order it. I mentioned to him that it would work for the babies so they don't end up with shredded ears. (There's a real spunky baby in that group-I think of him as Bugsy Malone because he's an alpha and takes on the biggest oldest ferrets in the cage that are twice his size to play. Such a fiesty one!)
