I had an idea, because I use these so often, with much prosperity.
Sign up for Freecycle in your area, it is the one source I have had the most success with. There are constantly people giving away items such as cardboard boxes (moving boxes), old furniture, tape, boxes, arts and crafts materials, cages of all shapes and sizes, and you never know what else.
Craigslist also has a free section but I've only been able to get a non-working deep freezer from it once, people either don't respond, or someone gets to it before you.
Seriously, with all those boxes and craft materials, woods, carpeting, and what have you one can seriously build whatever you want for the cheapest of all - FREE.
Freecycle works by keeping other people's trash (which can become our treasures) out of landfills. It doesn't cost a thing to use, and I've received dresses, freezer ice blocks, a futon, a solid oak entertainment center, and even a cage, plus so much more. Anything you have had sitting around that you can't sell you can give away on Freecycle as well. You can even post wanted ads. Who doesn't want a little more tubing? Most of the items are nice enough that with a little polish you can even sell them on Craigslist if you choose not to keep the item. Otherwise, you can freecycle it again.
It's more than worth joining. Also, if you're particularly adventurous check out some of the nicer apartments near you (and if you live in one, check them out). Around ours people are constantly discarding brand-new items outside of the dumpster. We have found a brand-new cell phone battery that worked for my husband's phone, two book shelves, a large travel dog crate used once, and even a working vacuum cleaner. There is constantly furniture out there.
That may sound weird, but once it hits the curb it is public property and if you find something great that just needs a little cleaning, more power to you!
