So, a while back I set up a foraging toy for my ferrets to use. It's the Barrel of Fun toy, it has a drawer you twist and pull to open. My breeder hob, Finn, figured it out quickly and he loved to open it and get a treat out of it. I assumed that my Marshall ferrets Fenton and Fiona eventually figured out how to open it too. Well, a while back Finn had to move to his own cage, separate form Fenton and Fiona. The foraging toy stayed in the cage with Fenton and Fiona. I put some freeze-dried raw in there and assumed someone would open it and eat it like always happened in the past. Well, that was a couple months ago, and today I checked the foraging toy... Guess what... Untitled by walkerstop, on Flickr Nobody opened it! That NEVER happened when Finn lived in the cage, the treats were always gone in no time ;D So, apparently Fenton and Fiona DIDN'T know how to open this toy after all ;D DOH! I think I will stick with easier foraging toys for them, for now anyway, and leave the tricky stuff to Finn ;D

P.S. - There were actually TWO of these Barrel of Fun foraging toys in the cage, and BOTH had old rotten, moldy, bug-infested treats inside because Fenton and Fiona never figured out how to open them up after Finn moved out

If you can get them cleaned- start showing them how they work. Treat in while open, half closed, mostly closed, etc.

Yeah good idea, I'll try to teach them. Fiona after all learns tricks faster than any of my 3, i'm sure she can learn to open it

[/IMG] UGH! Gross, and you didn't smell it at all??
Nope, I don't think there was any smell, even when I cleaned it up I didn't smell anything. It was a chunk of Stella & Chewy's freeze-dried raw. Probably not wet enough to rot, mainly just grew mold lol and the bugs ate it lol...

I'd soak them in a weak 10/90 bleach/water solution, and rinse several times before tossing them in the dishwasher to make sure the mold is all killed.
