Next year when I move I'm thinking about just closing off a section of the apartment and making it into a ferret room. Its not to big but I don't think I want to set up my cage. I was thinking of lining the carpet in the area with a carpet protector. Any other ideas? Like sleeping areas (there wouldn't be anywhere to clip hammocks ect) or feeders that aren't attached to the cage.) Thanks.

It would still be a good idea to have their cage set up, even if the doors are just left open. That way if you DO have to cage them for any reason- it's already there.

Its just so big. Haha. I mean that's obv a great thing but a little inconvenient. I was hoping to just block off the area with a baby gate.

Ah, ok! Sleeping dens would be good. Rubbermaid tubs with a hole cut in and a piece of the black tubing for an entry. Fill with bedding.

Do they need a hammock? I know they love them but if i provide them with other sleeping dens (which I will) do they need the hammock? I could try and make a free-standing one.

That's interesting but the rubbermaids are healthier for them by providing a totally darkened space for them to sleep in. You can put hook and eyes in the top of the lid so that you can hang hammies from that. Bob Church also suggested that you can do the same thing with the sides. He did admit if you've got half a dozen fuzzies all sleeping in the hammy (when it's attached to the top) that it's really hard to lift ;D I"m planning on doing that with some of the containers that are going into my new ferret room. ciao

So hammocks are not a necessity if a provide other means of sleeping?

They like them if you can provide for them, but my guys don't use them a lot when they're out, even if they have access to them. Lots of fluffy blankets in a sleep box is just as comfy in their opinion ciao

One option we were considering for our pipe-dream ferret play area was a small cage (like a "starter cage" with one or 2 levels) left open with hammocks and a water bottle/crock and place to eat. This way should there be an emergency we could pop them in there safely, and they had the option of lounging in there if they wanted. Our FN would be kept in my room (which is really their room these days).

Most ferrets consider their cage a saftey haven. Plus it is impossible to clean a ferret room with them running amongst you so its good to have a cage to put them in.

I have carpet and need to vacuum which I can't do with them around. They like to crowd it and investigate. I am afraid they would get to close and get a limb caught in the roller brush.
