So, I've started to notice Riley has trouble eating. It's as if she inhales her food and chokes...about every single bite. I just hear constant coughing and she chews with her mouth open, and the same with drinking. I thought it could be something with her jaw...but I think she may just be weird. She doesn't paw at her mouth, she can bite just fine (very fine), and she acts completely normal except with her food. Anyone else ever had this problem? Its like, when she heads for the food, I have to think "Oh boy, get ready for numerous panic attacks!"

A couple of mine will sound like they are inhaling wetly as they eat, they seem to actually be huffing over their food. Is she actively choking, as in stops eating and starts coughing with almost every bite?

Well, most the time she will sound like she's coughing to death but continues to eat There are many times in one sitting where she does stop eating and just coughs for awhile. Then goes right back for more.

When did this start? Does it coincide with the seasonal shed? How is her activity level? appetite? ciao

She seems to be acting normal other than her strange eating habits. I never noticed it before, so it could just be from shedding and perhaps she has a hairball (been giving them Lax). I just didn't know if it sounded normal or not as my 3 boys aren't so noisy and raspy.

If you are working on switching to raw and you're still feeding kibble, your ferret may be getting hungry and eating the kibble rather quickly.... no eating much raw and holding out for kibble s not uncommon during the witching process.

1 It could be a infection. 2 Do ferrets get strep throat? 3 Possibly asma, can ferrets get asma? 4 Actually I can only think of 3 for now. Try giving her hot soup to steam sooth her throat and ease swallowing, works on me:).

Have the vet check out her Heart! a persistant cough can be a sign of heart trouble. Last checkup?

We had her first check up with us the week after we brought her home. She was healthy. That was just about a month ago.
They can get asthma but she only does it when eating. I also haven't tried raw yet, just getting ready to try to switch.
I think she just eats too quickly. Hopefully switching ot raw will help

It might help. She could also simply have some trouble eating and breathing at the same time(deformity). If that's the case, I don't know that you can do much for that, other than keep an eye on her.

I have to watch Boris. He does make a lot of noise while eating, even more so with prey but he doesn't seem to choke any more than the others. I think he knows what he has to do, it's just very loud ciao

After tryin the raw soup, she did wonderful with it. So I'm hopeful I won't be having numerous heart attacks once we're fully switched to raw. lol
