My 5 month old and my 1 1/3 year old just recently moved up from soup to cut up chicken, pork, and I'm working on finding a 3rd protein source for them and trying to help them figure out that bone is food (they can be so picky sometimes ) and I was wondering if there is an average amount of food per meal I should be giving, as I don't want to give them too much and be wasteful, but I also want to make sure that they are getting enough to eat. Lately I seem to be giving a bit too much, so I was wondering whether there was an average amount or if I just have to figure it out with trial and error
I also recently took in Myst (4 year old) and Draco (3 year old), and was wondering the same thing. Normally they get about 3 ice cubes of soup, (I'm working up to chunks, so far they seem to be eating the small ones pretty well ) which are each about 3 tablespoons each, for a total of 9 tablespoons a meal. They are pretty voracious eaters, so on days in which they finish it quickly, I usually make another 1 to 2 ice cubes. Does that seem like enough?
Also, you may (or may not ) remember my previous thread in which I got a FN 142 for $25 (all clean now btw, I'm just waiting on the new trays and shelves I ordered to come in, the old ones weren't worth saving) and rescued Draco & Myst. They came from a pretty neglected and filthy home, in which they were fed cat food. (Thankfully they knew enough to get a corn-free kibble, but even so it was still pretty nutritionally deficient.) I initially thought Myst might have a blockage and what looked like a small prolapse, as she seemed to be straining to poop, and her stools were pretty loose. I was also worried she might be adrenal, as her coat was in pretty bad shape, and her cagemate, while his coat was obviously not as it should be, was much fuller. I brought her to the vet however, and as she doesn't have any other obvious symptoms, so she chalked it up to being on a poor diet, and should improve in 4 to 6 weeks. It has been about 3 weeks, and she does look better, but only marginally so. For the loose stools, the vet prescribed a dewormer and Metronidazole, and that helped significantly with her stools, and the prolapse seems to be almost completely gone, especially since I added a little pumpkin to her diet and started applying sudocream when it seemed slightly irritated .
Anyway, tl;dr version: Any average portion size for a 5 month and 1 1/3 year old? The same goes for a previously neglected 3 year and 4 year old. Also, any supplements I should be adding to the older ones food? I'd like them to gain a little more weight. Although the vet weighed Myst in at 1 lb 7 oz, she certainly doesn't look it, and I'd like her to have a little more meat on her bones.
Sorry for the longwinded post, I've just been so busy to update anyone if they were wondering, 4 fuzzbutts is a lot of work, especially since the elders are still in quarantine until I can get their ear mites under control. Add that to being the "housewife" of my relationship, (mostly due to my apparent resourcefulness akin to Martha Stewart, and currently being unemployed) and I've got my hands full! ;D
