Okay so I saw a post on a hedgehog forum I'm on and they asked if ferrets can have vegetable oil instead of olive oil. I don't know the answer to this, but I don't plan on ever doing it anyway, but would like to help them get the correct information. So yes, no, reasons?

Yes vegetable oil is soybean oil. Mine don't like straight olive oil unless it's fancy organic kind. So I cut it with veggie oil.

Actually, a number of oils fall into this category, including canola, palm, peanut, sunflower, and coconut to name a few.

I would consider safe but not ideal. Digestibility is done at the cellular level, so while they may get some benefits from the vegetable oils, a more ideal, higher digestible for the ferrets fat source would come from animal oils (lard) - unsalted of course and fish oils.
I think the jury is still out on whether canola oil is truly a safe oil to ingest for people, much less ferrets. And some oils from fruits and vegetables should DEFINITELY not be offered to ferrets.
So I'd play it on the REALLY safe side and only offer extra virgin olive oil, lard, and fish oil (salmon oil, cod liver oil, herring oil) and unsalted butter as their primary fat sources, with organic or home made mayonnaise as a treat.
Cheers, Kim

Other than olive oil...I don't feed veggie oil..any veggie oil. They can't process it, it offers no real benefit...why feed it. Give them something that they can use and metabolize. JMO of course ciao

Yes but if you buy "vegetable oil" from the grocery store it is always soybean oil. The others are sold by name. Those that give ferretone or vivify are giving mostly vegetable (soybean) oil with added things. Sent from my SCH-M828C using ProBoards

Concerning soybean oil and natural remedies... Most soybeans, at least in the US, are GM beans. Though truly organic soybeans exist, most soybeans in this country are GM (Thanks Monsanto), and really unsafe for consumption by anyone and anything. One should always check into ingredients and such when buying any product.
If I wouldn't ingest it as a human, I certainly would not be giving it to my fur-babies.

It really depends where you're from, over here if you buy 'vegetable oil' it's usually rapeseed oil.
And I agree, the point of giving EVOO is for the supposed health benefits, which won't be offered from vegetable oil. So why feed it? It probably wouldn't do any harm, but it's unlikely to do any good, either, so best to err on the side of caution and leave it out. Fish oil, EVOO, lard instead, if they can't get hold of those, they don't really *need* the oils anyway, with a good diet..

The ideal oil surely not but it helps to use a small amount to cut with other oils they aren't that keen on. And like I said many people still give ferretone and soybean oil is the first ingredient. So harmful no, beneficial...maybe a tad.

My complaint with ferretone is many but the worst is the preservative which is known to cause cancer...BHA/BHT I bought my first bottle of ferretone with my first rescue. I pitched the bottle that night and she got what the dogs were getting....salmon oil

A quick response since I'm really short on time... 1. Why feed any oil? i use it as a hairball preventive instead of using laxatone(petroleum products ) I give a bout 1/ tsp per ferret daily mixed in raw food. Ive never had to deal with a hairball in any f my ferrets using the oil 2. Why high quality extra virgin olive oil? Laboratory studies have demonstrated that HIGH Quality extra virgin olive oil kills helicobacter pylori, which can cause ulcers in humans. H. Mustelae, which can cause ulcers in ferrets, is very closely related to H.Pylori. Since oils help to prevent hairballs in ferrets, and EVOO may help to prevent prevent ulcers, I choose to give the EVOO to potentially prevent two nasty problems. Since using the EVOO, I've never had a ferret with a hairball, and I've never had a ferret with an ulcer. -jennifer
