We've got 3 on monthly lupron right now. Singles are $45 each. The price decreases per ferret when brought in at the same time, so I pay approx. $125 per month. Boris' last visit for his IBD ran to just under $200, including visit cost and meds. The imuran, the vet prescribed over the phone since she'd just seen him the month before. 2 weeks worth ran me $35. And hey- it seems to be helping! At least his stools are now a jelly consistency, not liquid! And they are the right colour, instead of all grey.

I have been fairly lucky with vet costs over the years, my vet is reasonable and I haven't had too much illness (only 1 adrenal and 1 insulinoma) although have had a few one offs like a blockage and a snakebite.
the real cost to me is feeding. I hear you guys talk about raw not being more expensive or sometimes even less expensive then kibble and then throw out figures like $40 per month! Even with doubling for the excange rate that is only $80 per month. I spend $90 - $100 per week to feed my 3 ferrets and considering I have no money that's a lot.
So yes ferrets are not cheap pets

Also take into account if you move or travel, you have to ship them to yourself all the time since no airlines allow them in the cabin or in cargo. In my first two years of owning Rolo I probably spent about $900-$1000. Vaccinations ($200 over two years), a ferret nation ($200 second hand), decking out the ferret nation ($150), food ($200 over two years), flights (2 @ $115 each), and toys.
Rolo is only two years old now, but no emergency vet bills were required, though there was almost one where he hurt his leg and was lethargic and wanted to be carried around all day, but he was back to normal by the next morning so we cancelled the vet appointment.
Oh I forgot I paid $250 for Rolo himself, so it was more like $1250.
Omg that adds up >.< I don't know how much I'll really be spending on him from now on though, other than food (which will increase as I introduce whole prey), flights and future vet bills mostly everything for him is bought and paid for.
Edit: I also kind of what a second ferret for economic reasons, I can ship two ferrets together in one crate for the same price (they charge me for a cat each time) and they can actually finish the pre made raw before I have to throw it out. Pets4Life makes pre-made rabbit and duck, but you have to defrost the entire tub to serve it, and Rolo can't eat that much. I tried JUST feeding him raw one week and there was still some left over >.>

Why not partially thaw, cut into serving sizes, Baggie, then refreeze?

Why not partially thaw, cut into serving sizes, Baggie, then refreeze? Well the tubs are weird, they are always really solid in the centre so I'd have to scrape the outsides to get portions out of it, otherwise risk breaking my knives lol. Anway atm Rolo is at home with my family so he's just getting Nature's Variety medallions every day with his kibble, so no wastage there, but when I get him here again I want to rotate the types of meat he gets, which means buying the tubs. The thing is, one of my cats has not been getting along with the others since my older cat escaped for a few days. (they are all strictly indoors only)We don't know why but she was really aggro towards her until my mom bought them some anti-anxiety meds. It was the calming homeopathic stuff, it really worked well to get the all to chill. Anyway, I might be stealing that cat away to Ontario in May, so I'll get her eating raw as well and then I won't have to worry about wasting food She also happens to be the cat that gets along with Rolo best. I think it's because she's also a little theif. She once stole my friends glasses when she slept over and she hid them behind the couch where we found her stash of elastic bands, and her plastic crown that she carries around sometimes. She's a weird cat >.<

You could portion the tub into multiple servings in a sandwich baggie and refreeze it.

Get a nice, heavy cleaver. Cut off slivers for each meal or chop them into secitions if you want. Asian markets have good one's for around $15. Thanks for the idea Sherry, I'm in love with mine.
Additional comment: Don't chop angry...or distracted for that matter.

How much does pred cost? (oral syrup form?? I really don't know much about it but that's what the vet is recommending once Pippin is off the painkillers)

It's one of the cheaper meds. Unfortunately, when I buy it it's the whole bottle of pediapred, so costing it out may be a bit of an issue. That cost me about $65 but that's 120 mls. ciao

Pediapred (liquid prednisolone) is fairly inexpensive, it would cost me $45 for a 120ml bottle, and I give 0.5ml twice a day, so if I paid retail it would cost me $0.38 a day, lasting four months. (I pay much less, working at a vet clinic does have its perks )
