Can ferrets by any chance get some diseases from other animals? Like cats in general. I know cat and ferrets usually get along but say a feral cat bites a ferret. Besides getting rabies can ferrets get distemper ,cat leukemia or things similar. Can you clue me in if other animals pass this too, to ferrets? Thanks

Ferrets can get canine distemper. I don't think they are at risk for feline distemper. Not sure about the other stuff.

Ferrets despite being described as "cat-like", don't seem to catch (other than rabies) many of the "cat virus'" like feline leukemia and such. They do as previously mentioned get "canine distemper", they cannot get parvo, but the closest thing to parvo is ECE. Please note I said close, not exactly so no you cannot protect by inoculating against parvo. There doesn't appear to be any diseases that are "shared" with cats. There are of course "critters" like fleas, worms and such that can be shared by all our furcreatures. Fungal infections such as ringworm and protozoal infections such as cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis would be examples of these. I don't know if ferrets are susceptible to toxoplasmosis as our cats who eat prey are or not, but it is a thought. ciao

Thanks for the reply. I take care of a "house" feral cat who is now not so house feral 3 years it took me to get to this point. So I have not been able to get him to the Vet without any pain on my part. I think he may be ready. Any suggestions how to get him there without major headaches? I know this isn't about what I posted but he still needs to get there. I was worried about what he may past on to the my future ferts if I CAN"T get him to the Vet. He is fixed BTW which surprised me.

I gave up fighting with my cats to get them to the vet. I get the vet to come to me. The cats actually come up and sit with her on the sofa and get their exam by getting tickled and scritched. That being said if I have to get them to the vet, I use some rescue remedy in their water for about 24 hrs. Apply the remedy to ears and nose about 1/2 hr before leaving. Make sure they have a soft blanky in their transportation cage. You can get a medical relaxant like valium (not that just used the word ) but I find them extremely ineffective and see to create an even more stressed kitty ciao
