So my little Pita has decided that one of her favorite games is to push all the paperback books off the shelf she can reach. They then get dragged/pushed rather close to their fountain. To avoid having the books ruined I bought rubbermaid containers and stacked them two high and two across on the shelves. I got up, feeling quite proud of myself for ferret "proofing" our books. I swear, not 2 minutes later, he favorite game is now to push THE WHOLE BOX off the shelf. Now I know they're bright little furries and that ferret proofing only works until the NEXT thing they figure out how to get into but, seriously, 2 minutes? I thought I'd get more time than that.

Welcome to the world of the fuzz.... ;D Seems that your little Pita has decided that you only put all those books together in the box to make it easier for her to push the books off the shelf. After all pushing all those books off the shelf was terribly exhausting and after all what was a poor fuzz going to do ;D ;D You helped her make the job easier and quicker Mad Max used to climb up on the back of the book shelf and knock books and the alarm clock into the litter box. What I found amusing was that only certain books were dumped into the litter box (guess he was a book critic ) ciao

Only if you want to admit defeat I refused and jammed my books so hard in the shelf they couldn't move them. Fun-Go figured out that if you hang on them upside down you can unbalance the whole stack of books and tumble them out. There is really now way to win (the more frustrated you get the more fun they have ) Eventually, they just gave up. Occasionally, they will have a go at the books but today the toy of the day was a box with some blankies in it and 2 sets of pop bottle tubes taped together. Finding things to amuse the brats and keeping them out of trouble is an ongoing process ciao

Pushing the books out of the bookcases was a favorite game of my first ferrets. I tried various methods of stopping it before I finally gave up and sold three of the bookcases. The only one with open shelves I have now is in my bedroom where the ferrets aren't allowed to play. Of the two replacements, one has sliding glass doors (that one of the hybrid jills did learn how to open) and the other one has doors closing off the bottom shelves.

Lol! All my lower bookcases and shelving downstairs have dvd and games rather than books, they can't do much damage and they are light to pick back up. Upstairs I just leave them empty. Between the cat trying to lay or eat everything and the ferrets destruction, it's not worth the hassle. At my house the problem is the dang speaker system, they are already ripped to crap from ferrets climbing them, but the subwoofer has a nice ferret sized hole that every stinkin' fert heads straight for! It's like ferret radar, where can I fit that they can't grab me.

I know the feeling! They find holes I NEVER knew about. Or make hem. ;D We at one point had thought we'd managed to clear out all of the things Koda had stashed around Shane's bedroom and totally ferret proofed it. But weeks, and even a few months later we would occasionally look down to see him proudly trotting across the room with my glove, or an old toy, or something else he thought was fun. We were soo confused where he was continuing to get these things again and again as we knew that stuff was out of reach, and we had ferret proofed - and this was all stuff we used to let him play with but after his blockage deemed non-ferret proof. I would get on hands and knees and look under the bed and climb under thre with a flashlight to get any toys and find nothing. We would move the dresser to find nothing. One time I was doing this and Koda wanted to "help." The box spring mattress has several cross boards that support the springs and such. As I was under the bed (trying to catch Koda to take something away) and he jumps up onto one of the boards. He then as only an agile ferret could do or perhaps a squirrel, proceeds to run all around the box spring via these perfectly ferret sized walk ways until he found where he wanted to put his toy. He thought this was all kinds of fun as I am reaching up around the boards desperately trying to catch him and "his toy" and he kept dodging into new hard to reach places. When he found a spot he deemed sufficiently un-reachable he dropped his toy and came out to see what I was up to. ;D After several long minutes of cramped, contorted struggles I managed to get the toy and started feeling around the other boards. He had a whole WORLD up there! ;D ;D I proceeded to pull out an entire collection of toys and random bits of things (cookie wrappers, dust bunnies, crumpled paper...). Most of them were stashed in the hardest to reach places. I am convinced he KNEW we were trying to take away his precious toys, so carefully stashed, so he put them where he knew we couldn't reach. We routinely clean under the bed and let him restash the toys, so I do think he was onto us at that point. ;D ;D ;D ;D
