Hi everyone, A Pheasant flew into my friends van while he was out at work today and got stuck on his roof wrack (it was killed immanently-poor thing)..
Am I OK to give it to the ferrets? I wouldn't want to see it go to waste...What would I have to do with it?? My dad has told me to hang it for a few days so that all the worms and other parasites die...
Should I just quarter it and give them in 4 whole sections?? Will they eat the feathers/ feet etc?? or should I pluck it first?
Thanks.

I'd toss it into the chest freezer for about a month, then feed. You MAY want to get rid of a lot of the feathers. I understand they make one h*ll of a mess ;D

Ok, Thankyou. Do ferrets ever actually eat the feathers?

Hi no they dont eat the feathers ( only tiny ones which dont do any harm they act like a cleaner on the way through lol ) but they do make a nice mess lol I usually just cut off the wings and pluck the breasts ( comes off pretty easy ) then clean out the crop ( pouch in the neck which is usually just full of undigested grain ) put a couple of slits in the breast for your guys if its the first time they have had it and let them go crazy at it lol my guys usually make a nice nest out of the feathers which I let them play in for a couple of days lol pheasant is real good eating lol take care bye for now Bev

Hi crazylady. I was thinking of doing this but then I thought if I gave them it whole I'm pretty sure that loads will get wasted and or it will go off before they eat it all. Sometimes when I give them chicken ribs etc they just leave it...
I would want any of it to go to waste.

Ps. Which parts of the bird do your fuzzies discard? I presume that they don't eat the head, feet or bowl? X

They do eat the head(and beak) and feet but not the bowels.

Pluck it, dress it, cut it up and put it into the freezer.
