I gave the young ones a small bit of raw salmon each & they LOVED it! Much licking of lips - theirs & each others ;D I've read that fish makes ferrets smelly - but if its good for them then we'll just have to peg our noses. However - ignorance is bliss - they may be REALLY smelly & we won't be doing this again. Are there any issues about feeding salmon? I'm really happy with the way they have no issues about giving any flesh I offer a try. They have pretty much started out on raw & they are really open to new experiences. Yay!!! & we are getting in early with trying every sort of flesh available so new raw foods won't be an issue in later life.

the only thing that i (personally) would shy away from is giving it to them more then once a week. fish have been found traces of mercury esp Tuna and salmon. I do stand to be corrected!

Katie's right about the toxins. So no more than weekly. That said- salmon is Athena's favourite, and Lucrezia is bonkers about smelts ;D

Tubesock and Hagrid LOVE salmon, coda is a bugger for the Tuna! to bad it is expensive though, and has mercury or they would get it as an all-the-time treat!

If I'm not mistaken, hasn't the issue of mercury in salmon been raised in regard to feeding it to ferrets? I know that it is an issue for people, especially pregnant women. Given that ferrets are so tiny, i would be wary of feeding atlantic salmon, pacific/albacore/atlantic tuna, halibut and mackerel since they have higher levels of mercury compared to pacific or alaskan salmon (wild caught that is). Hopefully someone with more knowledge of safe mercury intake for ferrets will chime in

Phew!!!! Wow does that salmon make them smell BAD fast! Poos went runny too & previously 'pretty good toileting' babies turned into 'gotta go NOW squit! babies. Plus it seeps into the carpet really fast No more than once a week sounds like good idea to me.

If I'm not mistaken, hasn't the issue of mercury in salmon been raised in regard to feeding it to ferrets? I guess I'm a bit more lax that way. It's a matter of "pick your poisons". I think some things, if done in moderation, aren't all that bad. I'm not talking sugars, etc. But not many here could afford to feed salmon on a weekly basis for example. Most will feed smaller fish, and maybe do salmon once every 5 or 6 months. Poos went runny too & previously 'pretty good toileting' babies turned into 'gotta go NOW squit! babies. Lucrezia had that with the smelts, however- that was my first experience with a ferret who actually did overeat. A LOT! Poor wee mite looked just like a kid who ate way too much candy and had a badly upset tummy as a result. And fish vomit is NASTY

Yep Sherry .... I can imagine what fishy vomit smells like. My gag reflex still remembers salmon poo. Lol Bandit chose to rest near the toileting area & the look on his face sooo cute - fert regret - in a sad sort of way. Thank goodness he only had a small piece.
