I just wanted to share my recent shopping trip for the girls. I think it shows just how affordable raw can be (I did already have some stuff back stocked like other chicken parts, kidney and heart, so I didn't buy those) Gizzards + hearts $1.96 (1.65 lbs) Turkey necks $3.04 (1.89 lbs) Turkey necks $2.78 (1.47 lbs) Beef $3.33 ($1.52 lbs) Beef $3.53 (1.61 lbs) Chicken wings $2.69 (2.72 lbs) Pork $6.65 (2.67 lbs) Chicken liver $2.62 (1.65 lbs) Cornish game hen $6.61 (2.13bs) Cornish game hen $5.72 (1.98 lbs) I found out this store had a $5 off $25 purchase coupon when you sign up for their email subscription. So I got 19.26 lbs of meat For $34.95 Averages out to $1.81 per lb

Is this the part of the meat that is normally used for human consumption or the other stuff? I buy my meat at Organic World (in Canada) and they have pet food that they say is human grade, its just not the juicy parts (breast, legs, wings etc) that us people normally buy to eat. Apparently it has 10% heart, 10% liver, and 80 percent muscle meat along with bone dust (I feed kidney separate, along with extra taurine, pumpkin, calcium etc). I also give them meals of just hearts through the week. They have a good variety. Beef, chicken, turkey, venison, buffalo, pork, veal. On average it costs about 2-3 bucks a pound, so about the same as yours. I buy each in pound form, and then when they finish their pound I switch to a different type of meat. So they don't really get multiple types each week of muscle meat, but every single week I change to a different type. I tried pork recently though and they would barely touch it. I tried to keep at it for a few days but they were barely eating anything so porks a no no I guess. I'm just curious as to if you're getting a higher grade of meat than I am for the same price. Since you're in the states and I'm in Canada where meats more expensive, I'm betting my deal is a lot less of a deal than yours is. Is it organic you were feeding? That might make up the difference on my end. Looks like everything you listed is about the same as what I get it for. I can fill up 14 spots in an icecube tray with about a pound usually so that'd be 280 cubes. My two ferrets eat about 6 cubes per day. So that would last me about 40 days.

And approximately how long does that last? It feeds my 3 for about 45 days. All are girls around 1.5 lbs. Is this the part of the meat that is normally used for human consumption or the other stuff? All of this was bought at a normal grocery store, so all for human consumption. Is it organic you were feeding? No, not organic. Organic usually costs 2-3 times per lb here, and that would raise my feeding costs too high

Most expensive part of my diet is always the chicken wings!

I wish....chicken wings....3lbs= approx $12. We can only thank the hot chicken wing market for driving up the price of something that most "normal" people wouldn't eat (just kidding....I have no use for those things, it's a good thing that my ferrets don't either) ciao

What I find funny is that on kibble, my five would go through a $30 bag (of Marshall's) in ~2 weeks. I can go buy raw meats and make their meals for $11/week and they are more energetic, feel more solid due to muscle mass, and poop so much less, which saves on litter as well. Sorry about the wing prices, but they are just so good during a football game - and the big wing day is coming soon. Pats and G-Men...my team didn't make it (Dream Team my @$$) but the commercials are worth watching.

Another thing to remember - if you are cooking meat for people and you trim your meat before it is seasoned/marinated, you can save the trimmings for your fuzzies. Same with egg shells. I someimes just throw the scraps in "as is", but if I start getting a lot of scraps I may freeze them and/or may make a "balanced meal" using liver/heart/ground eggshell. I've been amazed at how much "scrap meat" from our people food goes to the ferts. -jennifer
