I think I'd feel a little better if I were using something other than Marshall Ferret Lax to help my future fuzzies with hairballs...what other options are there aside from pumpkin, petroleum jelly, etc.? Is there possibly anything healthier? Do the majority of you just go with canned pumpkin? I've heard of olive oil serving that purpose, I wouldn't feel uncomfortable using EVOO, but even if it's mixed with Ferrotone would it still serve as a hairball remedy?

Pumpkin works so well since it works to push objects through the bowel. It also works on diarrhea to bulk up the stool by absorbing moisture. It also replaces things like fur if you don't feed whole prey. AND it's low in sugar All of the above work depending on the amount you are using. As simple fiber on a regular basis, 1/2 tsp a day, max. For diarrhea or really loose stools, I use about a tsp a day til under control. For a blockage, 1 tbsp alternated with 1/2 petroleum jelly hourly til nice orange poops are happening.

I'll be sure to remember this, I feel a little more comfortable with the idea of using pumpkin for them now, and I'll also consider your suggestions for blockages. Another thing, I took a look at the 'poop chart' earlier, and I noticed some of the fecal matter from raw diet can be a little runny, and that's no concern, right? Pumpkin would potentially make them a bit more solid either way?

Stools for kibble fed ferrets is way too dry. One of the reason for a lot of the bowel blockages is that a kibble fed ferret is always just that one point away from dehydration. Carnivores spend most of their time just at the point of dehydration if they live on their natural diet....put them on kibbles and they are right there. That is why when our little ones get sick we've got hours or less to move or they're on death's door. So, yes...raw fed ferret stools look a bit lax compared to kibble fed ciao

Stools will also vary from meal to meal. Bone vs boneless vs organ vs heart.
