New to the forum, my name's Kait, I'm an eighteen-year-old ferret enthusiast. Recently my ferret, Sid, passed away. January 3rd I believe it was, at exactly 3:00 a.m. I miss him so much. Currently I am saving up enough money to purchase two ferrets, making sure I have the additional money for food and veterinary expenses, and etc. Not necessarily rushing into getting new pets, just preparing for it. I joined in hopes of better understanding nutritional value and whatnot. Sid was often fed EVO Ferret, sometimes raw egg yolk and the odd time chicken baby food. I was thinking of getting into new, and hopefully better things for my future pets. I'll probably look up more enrichment ideas as well. :D

Hi and welcome on board. I'm sorry about the loss of your wee one, it is indeed heartbreaking. There is a reason why we call our wee ones heart thieves They always take a piece of your heart with them. It's for their heartkey, to get them to the bridge I noticed you're from Mississauga, are you going to go see Randy (ferretaid) and get a shelter fuzz when you decide to get your new little ones? or are you going to go out and buy new fuzzies? Please feel free to prowl around, check out the various sections, read through threads, ask questions and get involved. Everyone's friendly, so don't feel shy. There are no stupid questions, except those that are never asked I hope I will be seeing your around ciao

Heart thieves indeed. :c <3 I am aware of ferretaid, though I personally would like to purchase two kits (no, not because they're oh so cute), but for personal reasons like giving them names, feeding them a specific diet with variety (before they get to picky to bother) and training them from scratch, you know? Unfortunately I bought Sid from a PJ's Pets in Milton because I didn't seem to have any luck finding other options (didn't know about ferretaid until after I already bought him). I wish there were ferret breeders close to my area, I'd go take a look without any hesitation. It would be really cool if ferretaid bred ferrets, but then again that's probably going against why they're there, seeing as they're keeping abused/neglected/stray/unwanted ferrets. Which I totally support. It's just upsetting that there aren't any options for kits aside from pet stores and kijiji (I wouldn't trust purchasing a ferret from someone on there, might just be personal opinion idk) Anyhoo, thank you so much! Glad to have found you guys.

And besides, when it comes to kijiji they already bought theirs from a pet store, so it seems a little pointless to me to consider that an option.

Yes, we are indeed limited to what we can do about ferrets up here. One of the ferrets that called my house home for quite a few years came originally from Ferret Aid. His person had gone up there and got him. When he came to live with me, I called Randy to ask if he could stay here and live out the rest of his time. She gave me what information that they had out of their records (which helped me a lot) and allowed Loki Bears to stay with me. Some times they get younger ferrets but as you said most are from pet stores anyway. There are a couple of breeders or I should say were but I've never been able to find them. I know they exist only because I've got 2 breeder ferrets who were turned in my shelter. Randy also got a couple of hobs turned in too about the same time that I did but I've heard nothing since that time, nor have I had any turned in recently. Your choice of ferrets are basically from the two major farms, Marshals and Real Canadian....with Marshals being the major contributor. ciao

Hi, and welcome Glad you decided to check out a better diet, and more enrichment for your new little ones when you get them! I'm so sorry to hear you lost your little one- we also just lost one Dec. 31. It's never easy, and always heartbreaking.

I know Sid came with a little form from Real Canadian Ferrets...which is apparently somewhat preferred to Marshalls (according to random sources), though either way they're both large pet mills. It's lame. The only thing that I knew about Sid that was a little off in the beginning had to be his deafness, but then again he was a blaze/badger type, so it had more to do with his markings rather than where he was bred. That and he seemed a little..small, for a male. Thank you Allie, and thank you Sherry! You got that right, I was so heartbroken..more like, still am. :/

I'm presently reading a book on ferret colours and genetics. Your statement is so true. A lot of his problems are directly related to his colouring. As sickening as it sounds, our desire for something different, a blaze, milk toes, chest crests...fancy colours....guess what, they're directly related to totally destroying our ferrets. So add that up to poor breeding practices by the mills and guess what our ferrets health is going to suffer. ciao
