Monday am - 1/2 Jumbo rat Monday pm - 1 Day old chick Tuesday am - 60g Chicken on bone, 1 small cube ox heart Tuesday pm - soupie & 60g chicken cut in Tuesday night - 60g chicken on bone Wednesday am - 50g beef mince Wednesday pm - 80g duck on bone Wednesday night - 50g beef mince & egg shell Thursday am - 60g chicken on bone, 1 small cube ox heart Thursday pm - soupie & 60g chicken cut in Thursday night - 60g chicken on bone Friday am - 60g chicken on bone, 1 small cube ox heart Friday pm - soupie & 40g chicken cut in Friday night - 80g duck on bone Saturday am - 1/2 Jumbo rat Saturday pm - 1 Day old chick Sunday am - 50g beef mince & egg shell Sunday pm - 80g duck on bone Sunday night - 50g beef mince The soup is 1 full pack of lambs liver, 1 full pack of ox kidney, 2 egg yolks, 1/4 cup of water, pureed and split into approx. 40 ice cube sized servings. Each day totals just under 200g, 6-7 ounces, which seems to be what he's eating. so does this sound balanced enough? There's 4 different main protein sources, and the duck will vary between different game birds each month as I run out, depending on what's available.. I'd like more whole prey in there, but there isn't much available around here without ordering online, and I don't have the freezer space to stock up and make the delivery costs worthwhile.. He hates his organ, but with rat twice a week and 3 small servings of organ soup, will that be enough? Thanks

Seems to be. Even if he's not eating the duck bone, he's still getting 8 meals a week of edible bone(I assume he's eating all the chicken bone?), along with a bit of extra calcium with the eggshell. He's getting heart. With the liver/organ, would he be getting the approx equivalent of 2oz liver, 2oz other organ?

Yes, he eats all chicken bones, only thing (other than his organ..) I've known him not to eat is the rat fur... he'll clean it all off then try and turn it in to a new stashy toy, or a pillow He's getting about 1oz liver and 1 oz other at the moment, not counting whatevers in the rats/chicks.. i'm trying to increase slowly, but if I add too much he won't touch it. Only way he'll eat larger quantities is through small chunks in egg yolk, but I don't want to give him too many egg yolks a week..

Just reread what I wrote about the organs- what I meant is he should be getting that weekly, not per serving So if he's getting the 2oz and 2oz a WEEK, he's eating enough

Take care that you don't feed chicks (except as a treat) more than once or twice a week. There is no real nutritional value in them (despite their keen love to eat them). I'm guessing there's some Jumbo rat left over, which is why you're only feeding (1) chick? I've got females that will eat a couple or 3. You could up the amount of heart (though I'm not sure how much a cube is?) but everything I've been reading one of problems we've got with our diet is it may actually be a bit low in the taurine dept. Other than that looking good. Prey is really hard to supply. I don't know how many times I've got my suppliers all lined up only to have them disappear ciao

Sherry - no, he's not quite there yet, will he be alright on 1oz or a little more each week until I can persuade him to eat more? He is slowly accepting more each time... very slowly....
Heather - The jumbo rat all goes, except occasionally the fur, by the next morning, but yeah the chicks are just in there as a treat really, 1 twice a week is okay, right? I was just bagging up his food for the next couple of week ready to go in the freezer and had some extra heart so he's got a cube each day now anyway. They're usually about a cubic inch, or there abouts.. I have one shop I know of in my city that stocks prey, and it's quite limited and very expensive.. Definitely something i want to move towards, but when I worked it out it was going to cost about £10/week, compared to £5/6 on raw.. maybe once I find a job, lol.

Yes, slowly working up the organ amount over a period of weeks will be fine. It takes months for an imbalance to show profound effects. That's what I thought about the rat ..... that the chicks were more some candy than an actual meal I just wanted to warn, as some people get the wrong impression that they're a good dietary supplement. They're just candy and if you look at it in that manner you will be safe. They love them but like all baby prey, there is little nutritional value to them. I feed heart almost daily, so yes. I find that we're not sure the amount of taurine is destroyed when the heart is frozen so feeding more is better than less. I've started supplementing taurine to my sickies because they've decided commercial grind is better. I'd rather they continue to eat raw as long as possible so if they want to eat ground up raw mush instead of baby food I'm good with it. I'm just not comfortable with the amount of taurine that remains in frozen commercial foods, so I supplement at that point ciao

Okay, thanks I just didn't want to over feed heart in case too much could cause problems, too, like with other things, so I thought I best check the quantities. I'll stick to a chunk a day.

The one advantage/disadvantage with taurine is they really can't get too much of it. The body simply excretes what it can't use.

Weekly is good. You really want to switch up not only proteins, but cuts of meat where possible.

Its just their hearts come with gizzards is why I ask. I can always pick the hearts out and feed those every other day if it would be better for them. They get 4 meals a week of nothing but those together.
