Hello everyone. I have five ferrets, three are new as of Jan 6. from a cousin who could no longer care for them (newborn) The new ones are Jack (2 y/o dark-eyed white male) Peanut (1 y/o tan, peanut-shell colored female) and Sprite (1 y/o sable female) My other two are both 7 months old. Zaxx (sable male) and Tink (albino female)
Peanut and Sprite are small compared to Tink, while Zaxx and Jack are just a bit bigger than Tink. I'll add pictures once they wake up. I had two ferrets about 12 years ago, but had to adopt them out after 3 years, due to finances. I kept in touch with the person who adopted them for two years after, and Spaz and Gage lived full lives.
I plan on switching these guys over to real food (meat) in about a month, to give the new three time to trust me. Meanwhile, I've got a lot of reading to do - so much information that wasn't available before =)

Welcome fellow Jersey-an! What part of NJ are you in (North, south, central)? I'm in north jersey and have found a whole bunch of local resources if you ever need any suggestions for local places to get holistic pet supplies or commercial raw food. Best of luck!

Hi and welcome on board (think I was talking to you earlier ) Please feel free to prowl the forum, check out the various sections. Read through the threads, join in the discussions. There's a ton of information here and everyone's friendly (well...mostly they get a little antsy when demanding pics of the little fuzzies ;D ;D) If you're thinking of trying a switch with your little ones, you may want to do some serious reading and question asking in our nutritional section. There's some really good information there, a mentoring program if you think you need the one on one assistance or you can just read through the threads and see what some of them have been doing. You can't post to those threads but reading them can give you a lot of switching ideas. Good luck, I hope to see you around ciao

Thanks all. I'm in South Jersey, SJFerret Rescue is nearby in Gibbsboro and we use All Creatures veterinary clinic. After reading a few dozen posts, I pureed some chicken thigh and beef strips about a 70/30 ratio chicken to beef. Bagged em all up and froze some. I mixed about 3 tablespoons of pumpkin in and a teaspoon of salmon oil. Added a cup of hot water to the cold mush and they wouldn't touch it. Threw in microwave for 30 seconds and all but Zaxx ate fairly willingly. Peanut ate for 8 minutes straight! I had to hold and spoon feed Zaxx or he wouldn't touch it...he'll be my problem child (plus if any other ferret barely touches him out of my eyesight, he starts to yip and screech, unless it's bedtime) I'm working on the pictures - the camera went missing. I do have a drawer-shot from my phone though... Zaxx is bottom-left, Jack is the marked DEW in center, Top-left is Sprite, Top-right (eyes closed) is Tink, and finally Peanut. This was how I found them their first night allowed to play together.

Welcome to the forum cute kids. That's great they like the warm soup however never microwave raw foods even in short bursts it depletes the nutrients because of the radiation. This is especially important with bone in meat. I either use hot water to mix in mush and make it warm, leave it out an hour to get room temp or I warm it over low heat on the stove. Yes it still cooks it a tad but it doesn't radiate it.

Yeah, read about the microwave SNAFU after feeding them yesterday. Today, both Peanut and Sprite rushed the bowl and ate a lot, Tink and Zaxx waited for me to get the spoon so they could eat from it, but Jack wouldn't touch it (he's already skinny from the "diet" he was put on, so he gets all the kibble he wants till he doesn't feel like skin & bones) Their food was lukewarm today - used hot water first to steep their baggie till warm, then added a bit of warm water to get it to baby-food consistency. Tomorrow is grocery day, so I'll grab a bag of frozen wings, chicken livers and some heart - still have plenty of raw legs (meat is always in my freezer) At the rate these guys are switching, I won't be able to use all their kibble before they are full raw...except maybe for Jack, but it'll be easier to focus on him when Tink & Zaxx start eating on their own - but I think they just don't like reaching into a bowl, so I'll try a saucer tomorrow.

I always donate extra kibbles to the local shelter. No, they don't take ferrets but it can always to their needy cats. You will be surprised as to how fast you skinny one starts putting on weight once he starts eating real fat instead of the processed stuff. ciao
