Tonight, I let the ferrets out for the first time in their new ferret room and they had a blast It still needs some ferret-proofing touches so I was supervising them and ferret-proofing at the same time. I managed to save them from eating a rubber door stopper (can't believe I missed that one ), a cheerio, and some hedgehog quills (guess I need to vaccuum the room AGAIN ). However, Miss Sophie decides to go find a piece of super-jerkied-meat that must have been moved INTO the room, hidden in one of their tunnels or toys. It was pretty solid and she actually started choking on it, but I pulled it out of her mouth. I do think she ate some though. I am giving pumpkin for sure, but do you think this warrants vaseline? I really hate giving the stuff and it's jerkied meat so it should digest... right? I am just worried it will take too long and get stuck. What do you think?

Keep an eye on her, but she should be fine. Keep in mind that people (myself included) intentionally make/feed jerky as treats. The homemade chicken and turkey jerky I made is very dry and tough.

That's a good point Katt, I haven't had jerky in so long, I forgot just how hard and tough it is.

They seem to like it... my ferrets once pulled out an old, flat, dried out to a crisp mouse carcass that they had hidden UNDER the litterbox so I never found it. Oh they crunched up that mummified mouse cracker corpse like it was the best thing ever, a ferret delicacy

Mine regularly find jerkified bits that I've missed I don't generally even bother taking them away any longer ;D

I only take them away if that stench hits my nose. Otherwise they love those bits which reminds me I let the fuzzies play in my ro last night and I saw mr bean licking his chops in the corner so I should probably look for stray chunks.

Mikey - that IS disgusting!!! Thanks everyone, I won't worry about it. It just scared me a bit because it was so jerkied, I thought it was plastic at first. And then when she started choking (because she was trying to swallow and runaway from the other ferrets at thre same time ) I had to take her tasty snack away ;D

Ah bolting, sometimes they get overzealous with food and try to swallow without chewing when they are afraid another ferrets going to steal their treasure.

As a matter of fact, ferrets will try to make their own jerky, and I have a book soooomwheeear, that says how you can make your own using only a rack and the hot sun or fire.
