Hey guys, I'm needing to find some good kibble that's not extremely expensive. I'm looking for something that's under .67/lb.
My guys have been on Marshall's for awhile but we switched them to Dr. Foster and Smith which is annoying because they have been out of their food for over 3 months now...so we've been mixing the little bit that's left with some leftover Totally Ferret Active we had received when we bought one of the other ferrets.
And we are almost out and can't buy them more Dr. F&S.
So....help! I need something better than Marshall's.

I don't know about kibbles anymore, and prices here would likely be higher than you pay anyway. Have you checked out the nutrition section in the thread "if you must feed a kibble". It's links to a couple of kibble charts in there

Just a note, buying a higher quality food might cost more, but they'll eat a lot less. So you might be able to spend more per lb but spend the same amount of $$$.
As far as that price, I'm not sure you'll find any ferret food for that price. Marshall's food (according to ferret.com) is about $11 for 4 lbs, or about $2.75 per lb.

All I can honestly recommend is Wysong Epigen 90 but seeeing as how your feeding multiple fuzzies (not sure how many) you would probably go through at least 1 bag a week. That would be pretty pricey. Check out the more dooks food chart to help with your choice. I know Innova is ranked high but I would not feed anything by them they were bought out by procter and gamble. moredooks.herobo.com/search.php?chart=ferretSent from my SCH-M828C using ProBoards

Drs. Foster and Smith food will be out for awhile... the new backorder date is in April and there's only a slim chance it could be back before that. I can tell you it's a manufacturer supply issue. Nothing about quality problems or the like. It's one of the reasons I choose to feed as little kibble as possible. Even companies with the greatest of intentions have zero control over some aspects of manufacturing. Products travel a long, long supply chain and it can be waylaid or broken at so many points! I don't like any of the other cheaper brands of ferret food and I don't know a great deal about cat kibble anymore. Maybe use this as a sign that it's time to go all raw!

From the research I did on kibble before getting my ferrets, (before deciding on raw), I honestly got the impression that a lot of high quality grain-free cat food with the right percentages was better than most ferret foods. Definitely check out that food chart, doing a mix of kibble is always recommended too.

Okay, well I've searched those charts before and I thought Dr. Foster and Smith would be good, but when I mentioned it a lot of people on here said it was bad. So I have had trouble finding something better. And I guess we will have to buy something more expensive. We've hit the biggest financial crunch ever, and can barely afford food of our own. I hate to say it, but we may have to reconsider rehoming our loves... I'll do some more research over the weekend, but let me know what you all feed as kibble that is suitable (I know raw foods is best). Thanks!

By the way, I totally don't know why I said .67/lb .... I knew that wasn't right -.-'
Sorry, math + brain = bad... So anyways, just some decent quality food for a decent price.

Drs. Foster and smith is a good mixer food if you are in a financial situation. I would suggest mixing one of the blue foods from DFS and up and any of the green foods. You can maybe do a mix 1/3 blue 2/3 green or opposite depending. The dollar store sells 1 lb rolls of fatty ground beef for $1 you can make soups for them to supplement.

You know something? If you are in a temporary bind financially, use one of the cheaper foods as 2/3 of a mix, and medium one for 1/3, and a better one for 1/3. That sort of mix will last a long time, and when things start to turn around, you slowly phase out the lesser quality food for the better. I'd hate to see someone rehome over a temporary situation. We can all only do what we can.

Sherry, that's great Thank you for mentioning that. Hm I was thinking maybe do some Totally Ferret Active and 8in1 Ultimate mixed together?

Do that! As you've mentioned, it's temporary. I would, however, add in a bit of the food you would ultimately like to have them on. That way, it won't cost nearly as much right now, and they'll still have a taste for it Totally ferret(midgrade) is what the rescue here feeds, and the ultimate is a mid grade food. So by adding the small amount of something like Wellness core for example, it's not going to be a fight down the road, nor will it upset tummies when you start to phase the others out. Though IMO if you are feeding kibbles, you need to have one in there that is readily available in case something happens in production. That way you don't have a bunch of fuzz refusing to eat.
