My husband woke me up crying this morning because he found our rabbit Mullligan dead, He was only three and a half years old. He was a flemish giant and the coolest rabbit we ever had. This is the first time in 25 years that we have been without a rabbit. I"m not sure what happened, he was fine yesterday and wasn't showing any signs of anything wrong. (Although rabbits are good at hiding illness). My husband really took it hard, he really loved that rabbit. It may have been something stemming from and incident that happened when he was neutered at 6 months. The evening after I brought him home after surgery his glue came open and his intestines fell out. I had to run him to the emergency vet and it cost me $1500 for them to do the surgery. My regular vet told me that he was missing a layer of fat that would normally have kept the intestines in even if the incision came open. He said it was rare but did happen occasionally. He recovered from that fine but who knows. He will definitely be missed.

I'm so sorry for you loss! Yes, rabbits are so good at keeping illnesses hidden. It's terrible to lose a pet, but sometimes it's even worse if you have no idea why. It could have been from the accident, or it could have been something else, such as a tumor or something. A candle will be lit for Mulligan. <3

I'm so sorry, that's hard losing a pet out of the blue, so unexpected like that and not knowing why. I've lost one ferret that way and I couldn't believe he just wasn't sleeping like always because there had been no signs of illness, he was young, it really hits you hard.

I am so sorry to hear you've lost your pet. Especially so young, and from an unknown cause He'll be happy and healthy again though, waiting for you at the bridge.

That is terrible news. I hate the "loss aspect" of pet ownership...I rarely comment on the Rainbow Bridge page because I'm not good with words and I get all messed up just thinking about it.
When we lost one of our first two ferrets, my husband was so broken up that he swore he would never get attached to another pet. He avoids our current ferrets like they have the plague because he does not want to got through that again. I admire a man who can express his feelings in times of sorrow.
Hugs to you and your husband. -jennifer
Also, those Flemish Giants are incredible!!!

Thanks everyone. It is so sucky when it's unexpected like that. It really killed me seeing my husband so upset. Here's a pic of him from this summer.

Oh wow, he is gorgeous. Just be there for your husband, as I am sure you are. Remind him that Mulligan had a wonderful like with you too. In time, maybe suggest another rabbit that needs the care and love you guys could provide for it. But for now, all you can do is remind him how much Mulligan had been loved and he lived a good life.

I don't really know how old a rabbit is supposed to get but that is irrelevant when it's the loss of a furfriend. I'm so sorry that he was able to hide his illness from you, but it could have been something that happened suddenly too. I will light a candle for your little fuzz to guide his paws onto his next great adventure. I will also light a healing candle for your husband to heal the grief and to help him remember all the enjoyable times that they shared together. ciao

I am so sorry. I know just how special buns can be - I lost my own bun, Poppy, very suddenly as well (she died a bit before she was 5). I was devastated - they're just such beautiful characters, and they always seem to fill your house with so much life. It's very hard to lose that.
Best wishes to you and your husband. Your bun was a gorgeous, gorgeous boy, and I'm sure he's grateful for the life you gave him, and will be waiting to see his family again one day.
