So, as is a pretty norm thing for me, I got Scarlet out & checked her over, playing with her mouth & checking her teeth & gums for problems. I do this with all my ferrets once or twice a week, because I'm fanatic about good dental care (even my two cats are pretty good, though I can't fiddle about as much with them as I do with the other animals).
Yesterday though, I noticed Scarlet had chipped the tip off her right front canine & chipped a back carnacial in the left side of her mouth. The canine I'm not to worried about, I can't see anything abnormal other than the tip is gone, but I believe the softer tissue is showing in regards to the carnacial, as it has this yellowish centre. I don't think it's th root/heart of the tooth, just the softer enamel under the harder top coat.
What I'm wondering is, do I book her in & get it capped or a root canal done on it to prevent is becoming a serious problem? Just leave it, see what happens, & not worry about it unless she is in obvious discomfort? I'm not sure how she'd have done it, perhaps on a particularly hard lump of bone, but it's only recent & she doesn't seem bothered.
Thoughts?

Well it could get infected and I guess cause a facial abscess? I know this happens in humans if the tooth is exposed. I'd wait and see though

To be honest, if it's not bothering her at all, I think I"d just keep an eye on it. Now- that said, if anything crops up in the future(eye problems, etc), it could be due to the root becoming infected.

I agree with Sherry. I would definitely keep an eye on it, make sure it doesn't chip further or become infected. ciao

No, she's not bothered by it, so I'll just leave it for a while & keep an eye on it. Thanks

So, Scarlet chipped her other canine, along with another tooth between the carnacial & canine (can't remember that one). Discovered that she's started to bite her cage bars & that's what is causing the damage. Very bad stuff. She's got a litter of 3 kits at the moment, but as they were 5 weeks this Wednesday past, I think I shall swap her & her litter around with her sisters & her litter, so she can't chew cage bars. Miss,y her sister, has a mesh door that none of them can bite, so it might be for the best.
Not sure why she's doing it, she's got 3 monster children, toys & get 1 hour yard time, plus about 3 hours each day to just run around. Only a little time, but now the kits are older, I can take them all out for longer gradually, but yeah, I don't know...

Boredom, and frustration at not being able to get away from the kits when she needs to? Not sure, since I don't know your set up.

I would take her to the vet to have the tooth checked. (Or at least call to ask if there's anything that can be done to help protect theintegrity of the tooth.) Tonto sheered a bit of enamel off oneof his molars when he was 12 weks old. - the "center" looked yellowish as you described(thin enamel there. ) The vet was able to treat the tooth by sealing it it (sometims ultra violet and/or and enamel sealer cn be applied. ) My vet has saved 3 teeth onmy ferets with these methods. Tonto is almost 7 and he stil has his tooth, which does not bother him at all -jennifer

Well, swapped Scarlet around with Missy. Scarlet's teeth look alright, can't get her to the vets until early next week at this stage for a dental, but she doesn't appear to have done anymore damage to them & I've had her out more than normal to see if it is boredom. Kits are loving the couch.
All my ferrets are caged, because I would otherwise lose them. I have a fairly ignorant housemate & family who don't understand that if the ferrets escape, chances of them returning of their own accord is pretty slim & they'll die quickly in our area (dogs, snakes, eagles, ticks). I would love to simply have them free range it, but can't do that at the moment. However, they generally get 2 hours out each morning before I go to work, if mum happens to be around she'll take Lucien & Honey out of their cage & have them running around the house a bit, then I come home in the later afternoon, take Missy & Scarlets kits out, let those two run in house for a few hours & feed the kits, before I return them & move onto Vivians, which are much younger & she's a bit aggressive towards the others anyways, so quiet time on her own is good thing. So far, worked well, but Scarlet seems to have decided that a change is in order. Probably wants new squeaky toys too. Slowly working on an indoor set up for them, but I'm on limited time & space for that, so I'm working on it as I'm going along with general life things.
