Hello, hopefully this is an okay place to post this. I haven't been very active on this forum, but I posted on another forum and Sherry redirected me here (Thanks!) I am nervous and excited-- hopefully this will be affordable-- but I need to switch my ferrets to a raw diet. I've been wanting to, but the whole process seemed so overwhelming. When I found out there was a mentoring program, it finally feels like this is a goal that is attainable. This weekend I am going to buy a scale (are they very expensive? is it just a food scale that weighs in grams?) and check out the stores to see who has what kinds of meat. Very excited! I sold some artwork and plan on getting a Nikon s1800, which will be good for taking pictures during the process. I'm a bit worried about Pippin, his tail is looking very bare, I will have to take pictures as soon as I get my new camera. He's only one Once I get all the items I will fill out the forms Should I buy the meat for the soup ahead of time and freeze it if I don't get a mentor soon or wait until I get accepted? Thanks, Kiersten

Welcome to the mentoring program Definitely check out the local groceries, butchers and local markets...it will give you an idea as the costs and availability of certain proteins. Some are more seasonal (duck and goose) others like chicken, beef, pork and lamb are available most times. Yes, go out and buy the items you need to get your raw feeding in process. The program itself has closed down for the season (we're still helping out existing mentoring threads but are not accepting new threads until January. It's just that it's so hectic over the holidays, that rather than stressing about switching we will start things up again when the holidays are over. Read through some of the mentoring threads and see what other people are doing. Post in this thread if you have questions (you can't post in people's personal mentoring threads but you can read them, there's some really good information in there) I just use a kitchen scale (weighs up to 5 kilo). You will be able to weigh your food amounts and your ferrets to keep a log as to what they're eating and weighing during their switch. Sounds like your wee Pippin may have adrenal but a naked tail is not the only signs so keep an eye on him, he may just have a seasonal rat tail. All of my guys now have their gorgeous winter tails right now, but I know come summer, I've got a couple who think it's much cooler to walk around without fur on their tails . Good luck, I hope I will be seeing you around ciao
