Hello everyone. I am new to this ferret world, and I am looking to buy a kit. I've done a lot of research, purchased a couple books, and used the internet to learn all I can about these animals. My girlfriend has wanted a ferret for a while now. Her brother owns three. My BIGGEST issue right now is finding a breeder. I don't want a Marshall or PV ferret, and it seems as though the ONLY place I have found in this area with ferrets is the pet store at the mall Currently a Syracuse resident, I was wondering if anyone could direct me to a reputable breeder somewhere in this state! I appreciate any help.

If its from a breeder, it might not be as young a kit as you're thinking. Pet shops have them year around and in different ages because they breed them like that but breeders do it on the ferrets natural cycle. I'd assume it'd already be 8-9 months already, if they even still have any left. Kits are normally born around April I believe.

you'll need to wait until early summer for a kit from a breeder...
Jills start coming into season around feb, march... 42 days to gestate... 10 weeks minimum to raise ...
the ferret farms put their jills in season artificially and are able to produce kits all year round... if you want a breeder kit, perhaps look at getting an older one ( breeders do sometimes have extras that either didn't sell this summer or they were keeping back to choose the very best to add to their breeding stock and then decided they weren't needed just yet...

True. I didn't take into account that they go based on their natural birth cycles.
But does anyone know what there is around here? I really want to avoid farm ferrets.

This site has a listing (NY doesn't list any) www.weaselwords.com/ferret-breeders/ that may offer you something close. That also doesn't mean that there aren't any in your state, many choose not to advertise. Finding a breeder you can deal with that is reasonably local is all about searching and contacts. Are there any shows in your area? That is the best way to find some of the breeders as many show. Again, not all good breeders show either but it gets you contacts. It will also give you an idea as to what you're looking for in a ferret. Breeder's ferrets are often smarter, stronger and more active than the farm ferrets and will challenge their ferrants more (I'm not trying to talk you out of this by the way, I'd far sooner you "not" support the ferret farms) Another way to get a fuzz, is to check out your local shelters and the various buy and sell networks. Just some thoughts. ciao

Hello bclark96, I am located Utica, NY. Not too far from Syracuse. There is no ferret breeders here in Central NY. There are no shows in our area.
I usually pickup my kits from the shows or I have my girlfriend from Syracuse pickup my kits (if she attending the show). Depending on the breeder, you might be able to meet them halfway.
There is a breeder that has a litter right now. They are about 11 weeks old. I don't know if they are all spoken for.
Pm me if you want more info.
