Is it bad for ferrets to eat cold food? Because it takes so long for the food to defrost and warm up naturally and I dont want to put it in the microwave...

Not sure, but I know mine won't eat it cold. It is defrosted in the fridge first, served into the bowls and then I run a small pool of hot water in the sink, put the bowls in and let them warm while I clean the cage.

Mine get it anywhere from slightly warmed, all the way down to frozen solid. It's actually good stimulation for them to have their food in a variety of ways. And no- it won't hurt them

With Blake it just depends on what type of mood he is in. Sometimes he'll eat it straight out of the fridge; mostly his organs, his lean meat he likes to let sit for a while so the moisture on the outside has dried before he'll eat it.

Do NOT use a microwave if there is any bone at all, no matter how finely ground. If any of it cooks, even slightly, it can become like glass. Only use it to slightly warm soup/muscle meats if you KNOW how hot your microwave is. And then only 5 second bursts. It's far too easy to get "hot spots". And don't use it to defrost the ferret's meat. If it cooks at all, it changes the molecular and nutritional structure of the food.

If you have picky ferrets who won't eat it frozen solid and you have forgotten to defrost it in the fridge overnight, you can place the food (in a ziploc bag) inside a bowl of cold water. This will defrost it quicker than the fridge or the counter. But similar to the microwave warning, do not ever soak bone-in meats in hot water, or even warm water, because the bone will begin to cook.

I'm bad I never serve meals warm.

I agree with Sherry, I fill my sink with ice cold water and put the meat (make sure its in a freezer bag, sandwich bags aren't water tight.) Then let thaw. Mine prefer their food room temp and will just wait til it warms up and they chow.

My guys will eat warm, cold and frozen. During the summer the furbrats like their prey frozen...ratsicles and mousicles, they will even eat their rabbit frozen too...if they don't want it frozen they will drag it off and let it warm up. There is no harm done how you serve it, there may be preferences but food served frozen will stay fresher longer if you're going to be away for the day ciao
