Pet stores sell sick animals all the time and often get away with it. I mean if you think about it, what do they stand to lose? Worst case scenario (for them) they sell a sick animal and it gets returned. Best case, they sell a sick animal and it doesn't get returned so they profit. If they'd treated or returned that animal to their supplier, that's money they've lost. Not saying it's right (clearly it isn't) but that's the way it is and always will be.

What Bluemoose says is true. The little fellow that I met, he was a rescue. He had been in a couple of homes. Both homes prior had discovered the cost and the risk of surgery and pawned him off on someone else. He was about the size of a 3 month old ferret or a medium sized female. By the time I met him he was being syringe fed every 3 or 4 hrs a high protein liquid diet. The prognosis was poor. Surgery isn't always an option. There is nothing can be done for Boris the damage is the actual formation of the skull. Right now, Boris is a happy, active little fuzz...I will be there for him when things start becoming difficult for him. Unfortunately, selling sick ferrets is often done. I just recently got kicked out of a pet store for telling a prospective buyer the ferret she was thinking of buying was sick. This kit couldn't eat, was grinding his teeth and was smaller than the other 3 boys in the cage. The other 3 furbrats where all over the soupy when it was put in their cage....this little boy actually went to the litter box and retched. The thing that had attracted the lady to this kit, his tiny size and he cuddled. He was sick and if no care is given will probably pass on. I tried to talk to the owner of the store....according to him, it's not his problem They are a product to be sold....then it becomes the buyers problem I know that you want this kit, Dexter. You may be able to get him yet but don't close your heart to others who need a home....perhaps there is another fuzz who is supposed to be yours. I cannot even imagine what it must be like, to love a fuzz for not more than a few hours and then loose him. Our hearts break when our rescues die a few weeks after we get them, to loose a baby... I will light a candle for you and Dexter. ciao

I hope everything turns out okay and you can get Dexter back, its so unfair to the poor little baby, he'll probably get put to sleep if they send him back to RC =/ Makes me so sad, he looks like my Berry, shes a panda with very similar markings and colorings.

Aw I am sorry! I hope that you can get him back though. I bet that if it is something they decide is not treatable you could have him on a soupie/ground food diet. It would be easy for him to eat without chewing, and he could still get all of the benefit of raw! You would have to clean his teeth regularly though as he would not get the bone/meat or kibble even to clean them off. Just something to consider. Also, I agree with Heather, I know you love little Dexter and want him back. But if you can't get him back please don't close yourself off from giving a home to another ferret in need of a loving family.

To further my request of not shutting out a fuzz a chance to be your furfriend, to give another a chance to heal your heart. A few weeks ago, I was bemoaning the loss of yet another rescued fuzz to a friend. Stating that it just wasn't fair that sometimes the little ones would only stay long enough to feel love and then leave to the bridge. All of us who have rescued know this heartache. That we would often only get them long enough to start to know the little ones, fall in love with them, start to get them healthy and then they were gone. Her response to me, was to tell me the story she was told, that was that ferrets were an unselfish, loving lot. That each ferret, once they found love would only absorb and take what they needed to ready themselves for their journey and to gain access to the bridge, to earn their "heartkey". They would then move on allowing another fuzz to take their place and earn their heartkey. Each time a fuzz would move on leaving a space to be filled by another of their own, to learn about love, caring, safety and to earn their heartkey. I know this is a child's story, given to offer solace, for the loss of a beloved fuzz. I hope against hope that Dexter is returned to you, but if that isn't the case, consider this. That your love was all he needed to gain his heartkey. Very powerful love, you gave it without question. Just the same, another fuzz is waiting for his heartkey, can you find it in you to offer it to him/her??....in Dexter's sacrifice? Good luck, we are thinking of you and Dexter. ciao

Thanks everyone. And thank you Heather.. That story is a good way to think. It's just hard not hearing his little bell collar jingling, and him running around in my room.. He gave me something to look forward too in the mornings, lunch, and after school. I just hope he's okay.

I'm so happy you've gotten Dexter back!!! I couldn't even imagine having to go through that with MoJo---I've only had him for a little over two weeks, but we've already bonded so much. So glad he's back with you!!
