We want to put together a 'ferret run' of sorts for (supervised) outdoor play. He will always be supervised because the ancient trees behind us are homes for a large Owl and several different Hawks. Plus, I'm sort of hyper vigilant anyway (just ask my son ) What do you guys do aside from leashes and harnesses? Does anyone have outdoor play areas set up I could see pics of or ideas for one? Thanks! ~Kelli

I've got a question as well. About how much time, leashed, do you think is an ideal amount of time outside per week? I was going to do 3 times a week, for 1 hour each day.

Our guy Loki goes out everyday on his leash. He gets anywhere from 30mins + outside time. The only reason he goes outside this much (besides how fun it is to watch him play and dig) is because he loves it so much. If I dont take him outside he scratches at the door like a dog and just stares at me until we take him out.

My guys play outdoors all the time. I too, have a family of hawks that live at the top of my property and many wild animals who call my living area home, even a couple of wild weasels, not just my wee stink minks ;D This is the tunnel that goes down to the play area from the house. It is completely covered and allows my wee ones to safely move from the house to their play area. This allows my brats free access to come and go as they please This is their entrance from my bedroom This is the brats running along under the deck, which is just outside that doorway This shows you the top of the play area and the area under construction This is Captain Jack coming out of the dig box after the area is starting to grow over and look more natural This is my brats playing outside on a warm winter day This is Mad Max playing in the dig box Playing in their swimming pool Lady "B" enjoying some dig time ciao

Also- check in the "ferret cages" area. It also has picks of outdoor play areas.

HEATHER. That is so awesome!!! What is the tunnel to the play area made of? Wood and what screening? You are a true furbaby innovator! I've seen your tunnel room as well, and you always impress me with your OH SO COOL ideas!!

I can't claim the design of the outdoor area, thank you anyway That was a combined thought process between myself and hubby (he did all the work). The tunnels are wood and wire but we're going to revamp them as the guys love to sleep in the upper portion of the tunnel and I have to keep poking them with a stick to get them to wake up (not cool ). We're going to device a door type system so that all I have to do is unlatch the frame and pull the sleeping fuzzes out. The whole space had to take into consideration the wild critters that live here. I've got raccoons, skunks, weasels, red tailed hawks, barn, grey and screech owls, wolves and coyotes (not to exclude the odd stray cat but only until the coyote get them). The enclosure not only had to keep my little ones safely inside but keep the local inhabitants on the outside. ciao

Oooohhhhh mmmyyyyyyyy Heather! I do not dare show this to Loki or he will hate me forever out of jealousy! That is an AMAZING area! So much grander than I was thinking, but it got my wheels turning Gonna keep an eye on freecycle now for the little tykes outdoor toys. You have a lot more wildlife than I do, I love having them around (especially since I'm in the middle of the city) but I just don't want them eyeballing ma babeh! Is there anything on the top of the run? I was thinking a tarp of some sorts in case its raining. Thank you Sherry for the reminder, I thought I had looked through there but might have missed it, I'll go check it out now! ~Kelli

There is screening on the top, that is why it's as small as it is. I'm in the process of thinking of an expansion but I've not quite got my head around what I want to do ;D ;D ciao

Holy Beejebus! Thats Insane in a way! Wow! And what adorable ferts too! We're going to have to do something less Ritz Carlton and more Days Inn We own-slash-rent our home (SO's grandparents technically own it but we're responsible for everything) Plus I wouldn't mind designing something portable for when we travel to my family's farm. My mom has a lot of dogs I don't trust.
