So i am starting on the mentoring program, i want to know some common CHEAP raw meats, things you can buy at the grocery store. I know you can get chicken, i don't know about many other foods which is why i am starting the mentoring program:)

Fish in any large quantity isn't good but to have occasionally, once every couple of weeks isn't bad. Watch for off meats, the ones with 50% off or things like that. Ferrets aren't fussy about due dates. So, meat that is coming up on it's due date and has been marked down isn't a bad thing. My guys ate lamb chops the other day and the dog ate steak. You can often get your organ meats that way too. This time of year (up here because it's Thanksgiving on Monday) turkey gizzards, livers, necks, wing tips are usually at a good price. I'm getting a 50lbs case of gizzards, another of hearts and another of livers....my brats will be pleased  but buying by bulk is another way of saving money. The only meats that are out of bounds are the processed meats, like ham, sausages, hot dogs...things like that ciao |

Here it is not thanks giving until november! have a good thanksgiving dinner!!!! i hope the ferrets do too So i if i buy raw chicken breast that they package at the store, is it known whether it has saline in it or not? like the meat that you get from the deli at stores? |

It should be marked if it's been "enhanced"...I know what you mean in regards to injected saline solutions. They shouldn't get that, one way to avoid that is to buy bone in meats with skin on. They have a tendency to "doctor" the boneless meats

thanks! rob has lost weight as you know so i am hoping to start the mentor program soon! i need him to gain weight! he seems normal, it is just the pooping and peeing and weight. which i know can be signs of ANYTHING. he is to young for adrenal and is not losing fur.. hmm

If meat has been injected with saline it wil say so on the packaging, just read labels carefully and look for small print. I can buy a whole chicken for $5-8 (depending on it's size), and chicken parts (heart, liver, feet, etc) are fairly cheap and easy to come by. Pork is als overy cheap. You can get bulk packages of pork chops for a decent prize. Same thing goes for beef. I believe for most people Chicken, pork, turkey, and beef are the staples as they are the easiest to come by. You need a minimum of 3 proteins (i.e. chicken, pork, beef) but the more variety you can get the better of course. Venison (if you go hunting almsot nay game meat can be fed - mose, antelope, etc) goat (look for ethinic markets like Asian and Halal markets, they carry "weird" meats you can't often find elsewhere and ofte nfor decent prices - I get a great deal on goat chunks at a local Halal market) turkey (esp check out sales after Thanksgiving) If you have a deep freezer you can buy in bulk when things go on sale and stock up. For example you could buy a whole turkey (or a few) on sale after thanksgiving. Thaw them out, cut them up and portion into small ziplock baggies or containers, and store them in the freezer. It is alway good to have a store in case of emergencies too like natural disasters. |
