I just found out that my cousin bought a baby ferret. She is the last person who should have pets, let alone a ferret. I just want to scream. Or kick her in the head and steal the ferret. Well I am done venting for now.

Send her this way. It certainly can't hurt! Even if she doesn't want to/can't feed raw, we've got a number of kibble feeders here. Can you show her how to take care of him properly? Or will she get really defensive?

I told her about this place. We'll see if she joins. She hasn't actually got him yet. Just put a down payment on him, cause she can't even afford to buy the ferret. Let alone look after him. I just talked to her and told her about all the diseases they can get and the expensive vet bills they can have. This ferret is the last thing she needs. She is trailer trash, I'm not dissin anyone who lives in a trailer though. That is just what she is. She has 6 dogs, 18 cats already. I can just see it now, I'll end up with another mouth to feed in 6 months to a year. Grrrrrr...... not that taking the ferret will be bad. It's just that I know she will feed it friskes or some crap like that, and I will end up with the joy of trying to make it healthy again.

Wow that's a lot of animals. Are there restrictions on the number of dogs/cats she can have where she lives? In my town you can't legally own more than three dogs. Cats aren't usually as restricted but you can still get in trouble for having copious numbers.
Not saying she deserves to have them taken away but judging from your description of her it sounds like the animals might be better off somewhere else.

Maybe a discrete phone call to officialdom somewhere?

Yeah I mean maybe if she lived on a farm and had the means to support all those animals but I can't imagine living in a trailer with 6 dogs and 18 cats =O

I don't believe there is a certain number of animals that defines a person as being a pet hoarder but what you describe sounds like a hoarding situation. Once a person reaches a number of pets that they can no longer properly care for all of them, they are a hoarder. I agree with Sherry, a discreet phone call may be in order... especially before it gets OUT OF CONTROL

I'd consider making a phone call. For the well being of the animals. Maybe you can call the place she's trying to buy the ferret from and let them know about the situation?

I'm going to the pet store tomorrow. It's the only one that has ferrets right now. I will talk to the lady there. She knows me, and I will tell her of the situation. Pet stores are in for one thing and one thing only, but maybe this one is different. She's had the SPCA at her place before, they have already removed animals from her once that I know of. Her mother begged me one time to take one of the emaciated dogs from her. That dog was rehomed. The problem is that she doesn't spaye or neuter the cats, so she always has kittens. And for some reason she thinks she is a dog breeder, and breeds staffies. Last year she called me for help cause her mother dog had infected teats and she had to hand feed all of the babies. I don't know if she takes better care of her animals now, I hope she does. I try to stay away from that side of my family. The last time I actually saw her was 2 years ago when my grandma died. Anyway I will talk to the petstore and if she still manages to get the ferret I will do my best to make sure that it is looked after. I told her if she needs help or anything to please ask cause ferrets are a big part of my life and would do anything for them.

I have a cousin just like her. Last year I visited her for the first time in years and her "beloved" bunny was in a tiny filth filled cage outside in below zero weather with no protection. I managed to talk/guilt her mother into letting it sleep inside for the night. She was at a record low of three pets then.
I so wanted to kidnap it and run away when she bragged that her last bunny lived to the whoping old age of three. Her pets tend to die relay young. She gets them while their babys and neglects them to death once there no longer tiny and cute.

You say she can't aford a ferret yes? No suprise, i'd say shes booked! 1 trailer, 23 pets. 12 days tatter, 15 dogs 20 cats 7 ferrets 3 andacondas 8 iguannadiles, 7 hampsters, 800 rats. 1600 rats. uuum, 89000 rats. Why?

It sounds like a call to the SPCA or Animal control is necessary, especially if the animals are in poor condition. Is there a catch and release feral cat rescue group you could contact? The could trap the cats right at the property line have them spayed or neutered and return them...that would help cut down on future cat/kitten populations

I talked to the owner of the store today. She assured me she would not sell the ferret to my cousin, and that she didn't even put a deposit down on the ferret. She said to me, that it looks like this was really bothering you. Well h*ll yeah it was bothering me. I love animals and don't want to see any harm coming to them, especially ferrets, they need so much special care sometimes. As for the other pets, I am going to talk to one of my friends who operates a shelter and see if she can do anything.
