Couldn't think of a more catchy title.
Anyways I had the luck of getting a short term job that will pay enough to get the credit cards down and leave enough after to buy a second ferret nation.
We are planning on attaching the two together and taking out the side panels on the top. With one bottom floor for eating and one for potty, with the two top levels for sleeping playing.
Anyone have any ideas on what would be good to use to keep the cages together? I was thinking zip ties but I'm a little worried about them chewing on the plastic.
I'm also thinking of making one whole bottom side for potty. I thought at one point I read a thread where someone had bought a Rubbermaid type container and used that. Does anyone know how well that would work? Or any other thoughts on how to make it work?

I use zip ties. They are a thick enough plastic and hidden by the edges of the floor trays that I don't think they'd chew on them ;D I've never made a double-wide though, so maybe someone that has can step in and comment? I don't think there's a thread for it either, but I could just be misremembering I used a rubbermaid for a long time as a litter box. It only took up half of the bottom level though, but it worked just fine for my four (just as long as all of the corners are blocked off or have bedding ). All I did was cut down the depth to 6" (some people cut off a whole side for the entrance, but my guys were able to get over the edge just fine with no problems). I also cut holes on the upper corners of the side against the cage bars so that I could secure it to the cage with carabiners. When buying one for the cage, make sure it's about 20" long so that you block off both corners where the litter box is I say 20" instead of 24" because 20" is a perfect fit on the tray (it sits flat and still leaves no room for them to poop in those corners)

I just did this very thing, with one bottom half for litter and the other bottom half for eating. Took the inner walls out on both top and bottom, though, because I don't trust my guys to travel all the way up and over and down again just to potty in the right box. My litter box is a black "mixing tub" with the lip cut off, found at a home improvement store. Zip ties are the key! Get a couple different sizes, and black ones look a little better than the white. Have two people for assembly, make sure the door panels are right-side-up, and don't accidentally zip-tie a door shut You'll want a mallet and pliers around too. I was planning on making a thread with pictures sometime this weekend.

I wasn't sure about the zip ties, but they worked just great when I joined two FN cages. I used dark coloured ones, and none of my ferrets have bothered with the ties.
