I went to a hardware store to buy some pieces of wood to put side by side to slide plexiglass down into for gating off some areas of my house from the ferrets. I came across this... It is hard plastic with a slot down the middle. There are little indications inside the slot where you drill holes and screw screws into the walls. I think it's perfect for the plexiglass. I bought a long piece of this stuff and I might have to buy another one. My question is, how tall should I have the plexiglass cut to? I want to make sure they can't jump up and over it. Then there is the question... do I want to be able to walk over this thing, or am I going to pull it up and out to get through to the kitchen and such? Suggestions?

Guaranteed if you pull it up to get through, you are going to have ferrets following you ;D If it's just low enough for you to step over, they shouldn't be able to get over it unless they are exceedingly good jumpers. Even then, you can get a length of pvc pipe, have it cut down the entire length, and slip it over the top so they can't get a grip on it.

Well I'm 6'3" and can step over a taller gate... but my wife is like 5'3" so it can't be any taller than what she can step over. I measured up and she thinks it's tall enough that they can't jump over... but I have seen videos on YouTube of ferrets climbing over gates. I like the PVC pipe idea. I can just pop it off if it's hard for my wife to climb over with it on.
We are going to buy the plexi glass tonight or tomorrow.

Though I'm thinking that Mad Max was an extra-ordinary little fellow...he could jump a 4 foot gate and even figured out how to circumvent the PVC pipe. He was the ultimate escape artist and mischief maker. We called him Mad Max but his name was Maximus Hyjinx. Now, the only reason for my word of warning is that you're getting a pair of breeder ferrets if I remember your post correctly. They're smarter, faster and stronger than our farm ferrets . ciao

That looks awesome but my wife doesn't want big permanent hinged gates between the living room and kitchen... and between the living room and the hallway to the rest of the house.
Yeah I didn't even think about the fact that they will be stronger, faster, smarter, and larger. At least I'm getting females which means they won't be as big as a male... but I'm sure they will still be large enough to worry about the gates. I might just have to do what I'm doing and play it by ear unless I can some up with something else. If I could design a hinged gate that I could remove from the walkways when the ferrets aren't out...
